Which is why I said buy a 1920*1200 montor, if all you do is game higher resolutions are pointless.

Have you ever tried gaming on a 30in 2560x1600 monitor?

Please bear in mind that the pixels are pretty tiny (so great detail), there are almost twice as many of them compared to a 1920x1200, and it's massive.

I'd much rather play on my 30" IPS loveliness with 35 fps than at 70 fps on a 24" IPS of similar quality. And of course, lowering the res to 1920x1200 and sitting a little further away isn't out of the question either on really demanding games. Doesn't look that bad to me.

I feel the same way, plus as GTX480 prices continue to fall you have the option of adding another at some stage. Which is what I did, GTX480 SLi runs most games at 2560x1600 very well indeed.

I have two 6950 cards and game on 2560x1440 and it plays everything on maximum even metro.. with a small oc

Thx for your input......what made me decide to upgrade my monitor was the fact i spend most of my time looking at it and i have some spare cash, atm i have a 27" @ 1920x1080 and have always wanted hi res gaming.....nows my chance:)
PS is the Dell Ultrasharp U3011 30" wall mountable ?

Yes, they are great to work on but not so much for gaming unless your running some expensive SLI/Crossfire setup, also more expensive to maintain a high level of performance.

I'd take a a 27" 1920*1200 for gaming anyday, I don't really get close enough to monitors to notice the pixels so I don't see the point.

So basically your advice was based on your limitations of what you can see.

Huh, you can't tell the different between a 1920x1200 and 2560x1600?

also have a look at final8y's sig before calling him trolling.

Of course I can for desktop use which is what these are intended for, movies and games not so much.

As for final8y, I really dont care, I don't remember why but I don't put people on my ignore list for no reason.

He has a point though. I'd question, are you going by theory or by practice?

I'm pretty sure I've already answered that, but yes I have tested this monitor.

Have you? I've looked through all your posts and you've only hinted at best that you'd tried both. Maybe you don't think it's worth it, fine, but there clearly are many others who do think it's worth it, and trying to enforce your views on the OP who already has a 2560x1600 monitor is paramount to trolling...

EDIT: Ah, your edit helped clarify a bit. Which monitor, the 3011? How long is 'try'?

Well people keep asking me questions and I'm replying, why can't you just accept my post as an alternately point of view and just move on if you don't agree? you don't have to reply!

It was a 3007WFP

Replacing the monitor would provide the poster with the performance he's looking for and save him money now and allot more in the long run.

Another option for gaming is 3D.
I know it gets a panning on this forum but I think it's excellent and something that's really added to the whole gaming experience for me. 580SLI makes it very fluid and although the monitor isn't particularly large it's very, very immersive. Crysis 2, Metro, Black Ops, MW2 etc etc are all superb, the 120hz in 2D is also great as you don't get the tearing with vsync off and you get less irritating blur when panning across the screen. I just wish they'd get a move on with something other than TN panels.

Also, I blew a Motherboard and PSU over volting a pair of 470gtx's using an 850w Coolermaster, so I know they can be overloaded.

The problem with trying to move on from TN is that IPS and xVA panels just aren't quite quick enough to run at 120Hz convincingly, so that's not going to happen. I'd take IPS over 120Hz any day though, because I believe that the whole 'it looks smoother because it's 120Hz' thing is just the placebo effect. As for 3D, I had a 3D setup (2233RZ + 3D Vision) and just found that I'd leave the glasses to the side of my desk and just played in 2D. Which did feel a little pointless when you've got over £300 worth of kit designed for 3D... So I sold them and bought a U2311H...

ebilcake, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, but I took objection to the seemingly factual way in which you imparted your opinion. Which 3007 was it? Was it 'just' the 3007WFP, or was it the 3007WFPHC? The difference would be very important...

No problem, it's sometimes hard to tell when reading post and I don't always come across as intended, everyone will have to try these and decide for themselves whether it's worth it or not.

It was a 3007WFP, bought it years ago and settled for the 2407WFP which is still going strong now.

If it's 'just' a WFP, then it wouldn't have been 2560x1600, only 1920x1200. Only the HC was 2560x1600 if I remember correctly...

And no problem here... :)

Marvin you are sooooo wrong with the placebo effect thing.

Seriously try one. Then make an opinion. Yes some people are much more sensitive to it than others but there is a difference.
