Hi all,

I've just got 1 gb fibre from community broadband. Very happy with it.

My setup means it's not possible to run an ethernet cable so accept I'm going to lose a fair amount of speed.

I've just installed the below

devolo Magic 2–2400 Wi-Fi 6: Whole Home Kit

This is giving me 300 mb up and down (on my pc) on the powerline and has solved my WiFi issues through the house. Previously I couldn't get WiFi in every room.

Aware I'm losing a lot of performance I may need to just accept it. Excluding running an ethernet cable, are there better options. For example a more expensive WiFi 6 mesh?

Should say I'm actually on 3 gb broadband but they ran out of the equipment so will be upgrading to this in the next week or so. So setup needs to work for this.

Thanks all.

Why have you bought a 3Gb service when you're having to put every client on Wi-Fi? You'd be better off saving £19 per month and buying the CF Wi-Fi in every room package.

Edit: My god that Devolo kit was over £300.

It wasn't a lot more for 3 gb. Assumed if i'm getting a fixed % of speed, then would be more at 3 gb. Some devices are benefiting from it, those closer to router are wired but my gaming PC isn't (powerline).

Yep - what's the best solution would i be better running a Wifi 6 mesh?

Been trying to get myself the Devolo kit too, but needed to confirm a few setup details first. I saw a deal at Currys online, so tried to call but the line was busy. They rang back later, someone saying they are from Currys at this number, 02033320058 , different to the one i rang, seems like a scammer, how on earth did he get my number. Anyway, managed to sort out the confusion, will be getting mine in a week or so. Devolo is a great choice, not too sure about the whole connectivity, another mesh seems like the logical step to take.

Hi all,

Got the 3gb installed. I'm going to be returning the Devolo, it works well enough but losing too much speed to my main PC.

I've going to run Cat cable over the roof to get directly to the PC. This is the centre of the house, the plan is to then hard wire a Ubiquiti UniFi 6 Pro Acces Point Wifi 6 for my wifi. Assume I will need a 10 gb switch to not lose speed on the PC (since I will only be running one cable from the router).

Firstly, will the above work and is there a better option?

Thanks

Using a POE switch will save you having to use their own adapters, if your going Ubiquiti for the AP get one of their switches too as they use / used to use a different poe rating to most other manufactures.

Just a heads up, the 6 Pro is limited to gigabit ethernet, so at most you'll see is nearly 1gb (I see nearly ~900mb on my 6 Pro via WiFi, also on Community Fibre but the 1gb package).

Is this still the case? I'm using a TP-Link PoE switch for both the 6 Pro and AC Pro, and haven't had any issues at all.

They have all been standard PoE/PoE+/PoE++ for a a while (rather than the older 24V Passive PoE that earlier products used)

Proposed list below. Anything i'm missing or could improve? Thanks all

VIMIN 6-Port 2.5G PoE Switch Unmanaged, 4x 2.5GBase-T PoE Ports, 2x 10Gbps SFP, 4 Port PoE Switch w/ 60Gbps Ethernet Switching Capacity, Support IEEE802.3af/at, 65W, VLAN, Metal Housing, FanlessVIMIN 6-Port 2.5G PoE Switch Unmanaged, 4x 2.5GBase-T PoE Ports, 2x 10Gbps SFP

VOSGA Outdoor CAT 8 Ethernet Cable 60M/200 FT,40Gbps-SSTP-2000MHZ-CAT8 Network RJ45 Lan Shielded Internet Cable 60M Round Black

Ubiquiti UniFi 6 Pro Acces Point Wifi 6 AP 5.3Gbps 300+ clients (U6-PRO), dual band

Will cat7 be enough for 3 gb? I'm going to order shortly (trying to get delivery for tomorrow).
Cat7 isn't a real thing and Cat8 isn't a needed thing either. Normal Cat6 will be fine.

Ethernet doesn't do 3Gb. Your options are either 1Gb, 2.5Gb, 5Gb or 10Gb.

There is also no real need to have a 3Gb connection directly available to a single PC - connect your PC with standard Gigabit ethernet, and allow the rest of the connection to be available for use via your Wifi or other cabled devices.

It's a generic Chinese rubbish switch, that likely hasn't passed any QA or safety requirements for the UK/EU market.

VOSGA Outdoor CAT 8 Ethernet Cable 60M/200 FT,40Gbps-SSTP-2000MHZ-CAT8 Network RJ45 Lan Shielded Internet Cable 60M Round Black
As above Cat 8 isn't needed for anything, just buy some good quality Cat6 (CCS, Excel etc).
