£1 stores - Just how do they make their money?

Oh they are good. I once bought 30 Ultrasonic jewellery cleaners from a branch at £1 each and was selling them on the auction site at 99p start price and everyone went for between £8 - £26. I kid you not!

I still go in them now (year later) never seen them since. But when I find them. I will buy them again. Always some bargains in there you can sometimes make a profit on.

interesting ......

so the actual products themselves like say cans of lynx, toothpaste or shower gell
it is really the same stuff you can get in boots or superdrug?

Is there really any difference in quality?

lol, is this a serious question?

btw they are fakes, ie counterfeit, i think you should report them to watchdog or trading standards.

honestly :o

[..]
As noted earlier whenever I go in the damn things I always come out with piles of sweets/superglue and an odd looking mug with an upside down defected handle :/

There's a big "pile it high, sell it cheap" store over the road from my workplace. Sells all sorts of things for much less than normal prices. I often nip over during lunch to get a few things and far more often that not I will come back with a bagful of other stuff I hadn't planned on buying.

It's mostly excess stock and imports.

If another company finds that they have loads of a particular product left over and it isn't selling to the public, they'll sell it to these shops for very little because it's a better option than binning it or selling it at a massive discount in their own shops (which would make their own customers wonder why it's normally 2 or 3 times that price). Or it's imported from somewhere cheaper (and it's probably excess stock there).

Oddly, I've found very little there that's close to the sell by or use by date.

so I was in a £1 or 99p store yesterday.

they had lots of stuff there such as deodorant, shower gels to sweets, crisps to garden stuff - the actual range they have is striking but how do these places actually make their money if all items are priced at £1?

Also for instance a bottle of shower gel say lynx shower gel is £1 in there but in boots it is £2.99. I notice that the packaging is much more shiny in boot etc
but surely the product is the same on the inside?

so what do you all think?

Just goes to show how much more profit per item companies like boots make compared to the Poundshops. No doubt the cost to serve is almost lower. Lower staff wages, lower rental etc etc

Put an unopened can of coke that is years old in my hand and I will drink it.
'Use by' is a complete load of BS.

Completely agree, the amount of out of date produce I've started eating since I live on my own is astronomical. I've only been ill once! :D

B&M Bargains never fails to suprise me how much cheaper stuff is, particularly the main branded products and they are often cheaper than £1 anyway :P

we do get a lot of outdated stock in B & M and it goes pretty quickly - people aren't that fussed about the date usually.
The groceries are by all accounts making next to no profit- it's the prices that draw the customers in, who will then proceed to buy the more profit related itelms.

They make their money by attracting you with offers like cheap shower gel and other products you need and then for some reason you buy something you don't need like a wizards hat or some inflatable kangaroos! That's where their profit is!

I've always wondered what will happen to pound shops once inflation makes the sale of products for a pound not viable.

that has and is currently happening. think when vat went from 17.5% to 20% prices didn't increase. what they do is have smaller items, so say you could go to tesco and buy a 2l bottle of coke for £1.50, in poundland you can be a 1.7L of coke for £1. coke is just an example but that's what they do, or at least some of them

Eh? Coke uses Best Before though.
Milk and dairy products use 'Use By'.

I dare you to drink an unopened bottle of milk from years ago. :p
