100 MEG PROBLEMS

Im not trying to be patronising but are you 100% sure you are on 100 meg?

There is a possibility albeit highly improbable that your account is set up as a 30 meg service?

Just trying to find solutions to your problems mate

these are my settings for 50mb connection...i like you have been having issues with it for a year now, i have had 7 visits in the last year from virgin and each time i have asked for a network engineer and they have sent a fitter who only wants to change the modem...last guy i had was a few days ago and he put in a super hub

the issues im having are slow speeds at various times of the day...when it gets to 12 at night i get 50mb all night long downloads at 6000kb/sec during the day fluctuates and ive seen it as low as 78kb/sec...virgin say 50mb isnt capped because it seems like i am and they do a ping test and it comes back as 49.1mb....my guess is the frequences are wrong? can anyone shed so light on it?

Nope everything on your connection is fine mate, only thing to be concerned about is the upstream power level is at the lower end of the scale but if you are having problems in peak times it is most likely utilisation or SNR problems.

Edinburgh architecture is all underground I think which is the best type of archy for providing good power levels etc to the customer but it takes a lot of maintenance and can suffer incorrect power levels and high noise levels

i have a engineer from virgin coming out tomorrow (sunday) to talk over the problems we are having...do you think if the power levels went up alittle at peak times it would cope better? when we first were hooked up it was rapid 24/7 then overnight it just dropped, i noticed it imediatley and its been like that for a year...im guessing engineer at the local box pulled my cable out and into another tap for some reason possibley a weaker amp? i wonder if he put it up to nearer the top of the range it would make a difference? thanks for your help so far :)

Mine is 100 Meg here:

Pretty poor on the upload speed thought !

download from virgin server is pretty poor at 5.6MB/s transfer rate for 100 Meg (should be around 12MB/s)

Not at all. It doesn't work like that. The higher your signal is the lower your upstream signal will be. If anything at all it needs attenuating not raising.

Plus I'm not sure what tap ports they use in Edinburgh but round here the underground taps are a constant power output so the signal cant be changed at the cab.

ok so cheif engineer has just been out and he done a few speed tests...... one would come in at 49.x then the next would be 33.x, my machine uses windows 7 ultimate 64bit. he brought in his laptop and his using xp got 49.x consistantly maybe 25 x in a row....is there a problem with windows 7?

what anti virus you got? some anti viruses are known for slowing down network speed due scanning incoming traffic. try disable/pause your anti virus

Linux Mint got me 99.79Meg down / 9.74Meg upload, XP got me 98.92Meg down / 9.71Meg up and Windows 7 got me 95.48Meg down / 8.81Meg up (all of it non-anti virus)

Windows 7 is worse than XP and Linux Mint are far the best for 100 Meg.

Just because 100mb is the advertised speed doesn't mean you get anywhere near that, especially at peak times, but 30mb is radiculously slow. I'd expect 70mb at least.

I pay for a 1MB connection and average about 200k

from my experience with speedtest sites, they rarely give me full speed of 50mb, very rare.

thinkbroadband speedtest NEVER give me 50mb.

there is ONLY and BEST way to speedtest is usenet. usenet (newshosting) ALWAYS give me 5.9 to 6.1 mbps all day every day

i think you guys should stop rely on rubbish speedtest websites and give usenet a try.
