Right, first off im rather unexperienced in this whole thing, building a PC,overclocking and also these forums are all new to me,but im gunna give it a go over the summer as im sick of not really knowing whats going on with my computer.
I've spent a few days trying to spec a half decent rig,but as i knew next to nothing before this im pretty sure its gunna get ripped to shreds by you guys, which is all good as it will surely leave me with a better computer when all is done. Im building this in about two weeks and my budget is about 1300,although id like to keep it as close to 1000 as possible!!

Last thing!Ill be using a Toshiba 32wlt66 with this, at least to begin with, which apparently has a native res. of 1366x768,does this sound right for an HD tele?and will the graphics card be powerfull enough for this?

Welcome to the forums. The specification is pretty good but I would make a few changes, firstly I'd drop the Raptor, very expensive for not much capacity and not hugely faster than something like a Western Digital AAKS drive.

The motherboard is also rather expensive for something based on the 965P chipset, I might change it for either a cheaper one such as the DS3P or one of the new P35 based motherboards which also support DDR3 for whenever that becomes useful.

I'd probably change the case for a Lian-Li PC7+ or if you want bigger then an Akasa Eclipse and buy a separate PSU such as the Corsair HX 520w or 620w.

I'd purchase an aftermarket cooler such as the Noctua NH-U12F or Tuniq Tower if overclocking.

Change the DVDRW for a SATA model.

Finally, the graphics card is more than sufficient for that resolution and you have got the right figures there for the resolution. :)

The GTS is more than powerful enough. Here's we have a quad core processor, an excellent aftermarket cooler, very overclockable RAM, and AAKSes in RAID 0.

EDIT: Curse you, Semi-pro! You've anticipated almost all of my changes. :p

thanks for the suggestions

I had been thinking about the Tuniq Tower as a cooler but couldnt find it on OcUK,what would you suggest between this and the ninja?

The motherboard was probably the part i spent longest trying to find, but i seemed to be more confused the more i looked,so any suggestions on that are definately welcome! :) although i had thought about one which supports DDR3 ram

Cases were similar to the motherboard,I intended to get a P182 first of all as it has 3 fans, which sounded usefull, but im not sure whether theres much difference between 2 and 3 fans. Also there seems to be a few problems with the PSU being at the bottom of the case.

Last of all,is it worth it paying an extra £40 for the 640mb GTS rather than the 320mb?it seemed like a small increase in price(relitavely).

I'd get the Tuniq or the Noctua Semi-pro recommended.

The P35 I suggested is an excellent choice. It's a great overclocker, has a lot of features, and should be relatively open to future upgrades.

2 fans in a good case is better than 3 fans in a poor case. The Eclipse in my spec is perhaps the most highly regarded case on these forums. It's a fantastic cooler and is quiet. It'd an excellent choice.

Not at all. Your screen is not very large so it probably wouldn't see much benefit from more memory.

Might be worth checking out the Noctua UHF-12

For the res your using the 320mb should suffice

the noctua sounds good,it also means i can order everything at the same time and from the same place, which is nice!

which HDD would you suggest between the samsung in my first spec and the western digital which has also been mentioned?I think,at the minute, that i would be buying two, would you suggest a RAID0 connection for this?

Is a quad core processor worth the extra £140,or is it worth waiting about 6 months untill the prices have dropped, and then maybe getting a new processor as part of a small upgrade?

Thanks for the suggestions for motherboard, case, power supply, cooler and graphics card, ive changed my spec to include these! :D

For the quad core question, are you likely to bother upgrading in 6 months to a year? If not then I'd just buy it now otherwise you could save a bit of cash at the moment and then upgrade later as necessary.

I'd probably pick the Western Digital AAKS drive out of the options as it should be both quiet and very fast but the Samsung is supposedly even quieter and still pretty quick.

Raid0 means that you are striping data across two drives so automatically is more of a risk than one drive, in can improve speed in some circumstances but you do need a good backup strategy or at least not to care if you lose data. :)

I hadn't actually noticed but it appears to have disappeared from OcUKs product lineup in the past couple of days, sorry about that. :)

Yeah i noticed that when buying my rig, i kinda wanted the Tuniq Tower more than the Noctua

i probably will be upgrading within the next year, even if its just a processor and maybe a new monitor with a decent resolution and/or a graphics card. So the e6600 would be my best option?

Raid0 sounds like a bit of a risk, especially since its my first build!!
would i be better off just buying one drive,or would two still be my best option, and maybe installing my OS on one of them and using the other for storage?

You can really do whatever you like. I spec'd the RAID 0 setup as it's faster and cheaper than the Raptor setup you had. The AAKS drives are quite fast so you'd be just fine to use one or get two and use one for storage.

i think what ill do is buy the two AAKS drives and initially set them up with one just as a storage drive, then if i get a bit more confident i could backup the data i need and try setting them up in RAID0.

Thanks for all the help btw!keep it coming!! ;)

ok i used none of the two offers due to u waiting to build

this is what you could do with about 1300 in 2 weeks

spec00001.jpg

keeping a tight budget best bang for buck maybe

spec00002.jpg

and if it was my money buying the pc id get this

ok,once again, thanks for all the help guys!

my second attempt is below,i know its not perfect so any suggestions would be much appreciated!! :)

its definately getting there :)

i cant seem to find any reviews of the AAKS HDDs ive got in there,do these come recommended?

also, which OS would you suggest running this on?is it worth upgrading to vista?

Good second spec, I would use XP for less OS headaches for the moment.

Also, you could get the DS3R if the DS3P is out of stock. Same except it has DDR3 support.
