106 XSi Project Thread

Little update here.

So, earlier i said i thought the car was fixed, how wrong was I :(. I had our mechanic fit a new clutch, as the old one was ruined due to oil contamination, and he put the new (secondhand) gearbox back on. It then sat in the garage for a few weeks while I was at uni. Got back from university on wednesday and couldn't wait to see if it was all ok.

Opened the garage up and took it down the road for a drive, and behold, the differential on this supposedly decent gearbox was whining terribly. Oh dear. But as least now I have a decent casing for the box to be rebuilt in. I'm back at work now so money isn't as much of an issue as when I was at uni, so this is the plan now.

Waiting for a group buy on Quaife ATB diffs to be sorted out and should have one ordered by the end of june. While this is being sorted out I'm going to get the gearbox rebuilt with fresh oil seals, uprated bearings and new synchro's for the first three gears.

I'm now borrowing my brothers punto off him to drive while my car is out of action. I hate driving it compared to the 106, its so wallowy and has no steering feel whatsoever but I'll have to make do. I'm also considering maybe buying it off him to keep as a daily, and then I can really spend some time and money on the 106, and sort it out good and proper

Anyway thats about it for now, will update this a bit more when the gearbox is finally sorted!

Thanks, Tom.

Its fixed, WOOOO,

Pretty happy after whats been a ridiculously long day today. not got any pics so you'll just have to beleive me ;) (I'm serious)

Got up at 8am today loaded all my tools and stuff into the car and drove to garden city? somewhere off the M1, were at about 11am I met a lad who was breaking an XSi. He wanted the car as a rolling chassis still, so he wanted the engine and box off. So, set about dropping the enigne out, this was made harder by the fact I couldn't get the wheels off, because he had lost his locking wheel nut

Finally about 2pm I finished and had the gearbox I was after, got back home around 4pm, had some food, and set about fitting the new box.

Just about an hour ago finished fitting it all up, and its good. So i'm pretty happy. My XSi is back. Now just got to make sure everything is torqued up ok, and then get it insured again and go.

Pretty knacked though after today, its been long. :)

Hi there, little update on this, decided to sell the car now, and try and buy something a bit more reliable. Thinking about an mx-5, or something else jap. Here are some pictures which i took for the sale if anyone is interested.

haha, I do like the idea of one, but ideally I'd like a 1.8, and with a budget of about £1200 I think I'll be waiting a while for one to pop up near me. I have a few other cars to consider, but need to get this one sold before I decide on anything for definete.
