1070 causing problems?

Hi all,

I've just had a real scary moment with me system as to where I clicked to open a browser, then all of a sudden what sounded like the 1070 fan went into overdrive spinning rapidly. The monitor then lost signal and I had to reboot.

After the reboot the windows logo would appear & then the screen would go black with a static white bar across appearing. Three reboots, exactly the same, so I then tried pressing F8 at startup and now everything is back to normal.

I'm getting worried as although the last few months have been OK, I did experience some shut downs before Christmas, but after reseating all of my components inside, have not had any issues since. Could I have a faulty 1070?

How old is the PSU? The fans spinning up like that is normally because of overheating or PSU malfunctioning although could be instability with RAM/CPU/GPU. What temperatures are you running? If you don't know download portable HWinfo64, if that looks good then start looking at Memtest86+.

Are you overclocked?

PSU is around 3 years old now I reckon. No overclocks set yet. I'll give them programmes a try.

Yeah try that as it might be something really simple, it does seem odd that it happened when no load was going through the system though.

How can I identify trends for problems? Anything in particular I need to look for? Not super tech savy & the interface on HWInfo is a bit baffling.

If you wish to you can always upload a snap of HWinfo here but what you are mostly looking for is CPU temperature, GPU temperature. CPU you don't want to be over 80c in daily use and the GPU no more than 75c if possible.

As above, especially an overnight memtest run and PSU is always a possibility - but your MB may have just experienced a minor freak out under initial load.

I would also clear the CMOS and perhaps look at the BIOS updates and check if any are relevant to your rig - i.e. better memory or gfx compatibility (sometimes more juice to the PCIe) - if so I would also flash to the latest BIOS.

If your temps prove to be OK - I would reseat all connections, the gfx and memory but pay particular attention to the memory. Even if it passes memtest, if you experience a similar episode, I would retest each stick individually overnight.
