1070 vs 980 Ti

Doesn't matter how clued up the enthusiasts are, if they recently paid £550+ for an outgoing card, many are likely to be biased.
I remember reading "but if the 980 TI is overclocked" but when it's convienient people forget the new card can be overclocking and also overclocking isn't quite the same as out of the box performance either.
It's obvious new tech performance even if the paper FPS is the same as an outgoing product, it's going to be a much better all-round product than some old 1.5 to 2 year old tech.

Bingo.

There is lots of bias on this forum. Luckily it is easy to filter and can be half the fun anyway :)

It's not just pure performance tho that differentiates the cards, isn't there new stuff like Voxel illumination, VR stuff and other things that the 10 series introduced?

More reasons why you're better off with a 1070, Plus as mentioned Pascal does some of the new api bits better than Maxwell.

So an overclocked 980ti may keep pace with an overclocked 1070 and tit for tat but as we go forward it will start falling behind, We already see it in some games.
So far 980TI after oc is still faster than 1070OC even under dx12-BF1 and in deus ex dx12.
??? Really
And where did you get that info from? According to this the 980ti is behind the 1070 in Deus ex DX11 and falls even further behind in DX12. Even if it overclocks a bit better it isn't going to make up the difference.

Googling Bf1 results shows them side by side in DX11 and the 1070 pulling ahead by 6 frames in DX12 (1440p), An indication that Pascal handles DX12 better possibly?

Guru 3d testing referecne 980TI at 1000-1100Mhz.Aftermarket card is 20% faster(and still have plenty oc headroom)

It's no different for the 1070, There not bad overclockers, just not as good as the Maxwell ti, the thing is they do still overclock pretty well so the Ti isn't going to have an additional 10+ frames of overclock under it's hood on top of how the 1070 overclocks so it can pull even in the example given.
There's no denying the Ti is a good card, It was the King of it's generation thanks to the aftermarket models. However we now have the Pascal cards that have a distinct advantage over Maxwell in certain areas so yes the 980ti can often match and sometimes beat the 1070 in many games but going forward it will fall behind more and more as we've already been seeing. We can disagree about it until the cows come home but it won't change the facts. It'd be interesting to see actual benching reviews of maxed v maxed and then see the same testing done 6 months down the line on titles yet to be released. That's when we'll see the difference made by the changes Nvidia made to Pascal.

Fact is 980ti still holds its own very well compared to even a stock 1080, let alone a 1070, if anyone bought a 980ti pretty early on, myself included, I think we got an exceptionally good deal out of it, I usually upgrade every generation but this time around I just don't feel I've been left behind at all, it's amazing how well the 980ti's kept up, but on here making such a statement is often met with adversarial commentary.

How dare someone beleive that a last generation top end card can match, and even on occasion beat a current gen mid/high end card, the world isn't right if such a statement could be true, the money you spent on a 1070, complete waste, us last gen 980ti users are sipping Champaign bought from the money we saved from not needing to upgrade this gen, you better believe it, we've won the GPU game of life, our faces hurt from smugness ;)

Tbh by the time 1070 overtakes the 980Ti by much, they both will be decently outclassed anyways. I'm just waiting for a big perf increase that isn't stupid money, so Pascal refresh or Volta, or even maybe Vega for me.

980Ti is still a fine performer :)

just got myself a second hand 980 ti at a very reasonable price, would not have got a new one at this stage [if a new one could even be found]. All depends o n price 1070's will drop as soon as the next top end card comes out. Will hang on to the ti untill the next ti [or whatever] becomes affordable.

Reference GTX1070 runs close to 1900mhz.They are pretty much maxed out at stock. You can get another 10% from GTX1070 and not even close to 980TI oc headroom(reference 980TI have close to 40% oc headroom)
