Hi from Greece!
Quick question: I'm looking to upgrade my 1070 rig (rest of system: 9700K, 16Gb 3600Ram). I game @ 1080p with a 144Hz monitor. Which upgrade do you recommend, in order to have something like 120-140 fps at max settings? 3070? 3070 ti? 3060ti wont achieve what i'm after i think...

Many thanks!

Yeah if I were looking to upgrade to 3070 kind of levels I'd also be looking at a monitor upgrade too, to something like a 1440p 120-144hz monitor. Maybe if you want to future proof get the better gpu (3070) and get the monitor upgrade later?

That depends on budget which we don't know.

I'd get a GPU that can handle your current resolution Zer with some to spare so that when/if you decide to go up to 1440p, you won't need to fork out more money. Plus what's playable today at max frames might not be the case in newer titles. If it was me, I'd probably go with 3070 and upwards. I got a 3080 last year and bought myself a Dell 27" 165Hz 1440p monitor S2721DGFA which seems to be a nice fit so far for the 3080. 1080p and 144hz will be easy for the 3070 and will last you a long time at that resolution and should be fine for a decent length of time at 1440p when/if you decide to change.

6700xt

%20 less cpu overhead

9700k will bottleneck more with 3070 compared to 6700xt

9700k is already hitting near max utilization in most of the games, you will be heavily CPU bound at 1080p 144 hz with it

nvidia drivers have %20-25 cpu overhead. and its not fixable (it needs hardware scheduler, which nvidia gpus lack)

if you're going to stick with 9700k, which is a fine cpu and should do fine 4-5 years, you must go with Radeon. having %20-25 more CPU overhead will mean a lot...

This is essentially my conclusion at the end, get the higher end gpu first and then potentially higher end monitor later (budget depending as you say)

Only issue with todays games is you aim for 1080p 144hz+ max settings and likely see a 30% drop in performance to nearly double the resolution up (80%) to 1440p due to CPU bottlenecks etc.

3060/Ti should do fine. 3070/Ti + 1440P 144hz is probably the sweet spot IMO as the cpu will handle it better also. However depends on the games, Some run like ***** even with the best cards. RTX enabled etc etc.

Only issue today is FE 3070 is like £480, 3080 £649. Most AIB/scalpers/bots asking like 1.5-2x the price, some cases more.

Thanks for the answers guys!
That is my line of thought generally... Get a GPU one tier above absolute minimum needed, enjoy games @ high refresh rates at 1080p, preferably with RTX on (would like to see it and form an opinion), keep 9700K, and when budget allows upgrade monito to 1440p 144Hz. Bearing these in mind i am considering 3060ti wont suffice, 3070is good, 3070 ti is more abundant and at the same price, 6700Xt is also a choice but inferior at the RT department...
Do 3070 ti temps/power consumption bother you? Please remember i live in Greece!

Seems like a very solid plan! Only problem is the current gpu prices but they are coming down so might be much better in a month!

At higher refresh/FPS, your minimum FPS will be determined by your CPU not your graphics card.

Having a more powerful graphics card lets you turn the resolution and/or graphics settings up and get higher FPS.

But if you turn all your graphics settings down to minimum on whatever game you play and around the action your FPS drops a better graphics card won't help that.

That being said a 9700k is a 9th gen Intel should be pretty good.
