£10K convertable

S2000 for hassle free daily driving.240hp out of the box too.

Maybe something more hardcore if it's gonna be a toy but prepare for compromises.

depends what he wants. I would rather have an s2000/elise, but as I have a bike for my thrills, I would go for the slightly softer and more comfy (but still quickish and right wheel drive) BMW's.
But working on that premise I wouldn't be getting a convertable anyway. :D

Depends how harcore he wants to go and how he drives, he may appreciate the straight 6 torquey delivery of the bimmer (and the comfort/pimpage), or the balls out silly revs of the ronda, or throwing any and all practicality out of the window (but having fun) VX220 turbo/elise. We cant decide what he likes for him!

Slightly different cars to bring into the equation (and I don't think they have been suggested)

what about the Merc CLK and SLK? They wouldn't be my choice but they are possibles.

Also a note on the finance it may pay for your friend to get a bank loan with his bank/building society rather than taking out finance on the actual car. Normally the interest rate will be lower at the bank/building society (6.4% on loans over 7500 at nationwide for example) compared to a finance company (8%+ normally)

S1 Lotus Elise.

10k is strong money for one, and he should find a brilliant example. I know he said 2000 and the last of the S1s were made in 2000 with lots of little niggles sorted.

He should be able to get a good VX220 (Vauxhall) or higher mileage S2 Elise for circa 13k.

However if its going to be used for average+ mileage then it might be a little too basic. Although plenty of people use them as daily drives.

I'll comment more if he feels it could be a possibility.

You could easily get a 2004-5 MG TF 160 for £10k !

But if hes willing to have a 2000 car a S2000 or MX-5 makes as much sense! Go and try them it's the only way to know.

For 10k you can get a 53 plate MX5 1.8 Euphoric which is just about top spec, it will have about 20k on the clock.

A 1999 / 2000 MX depending on how many miles and spec will go from 5k - 8k.

The guy clearly needs guidance or he'd not have asked ocuk which car to buy. You think he knows the perils of Boxster ownership? I think it's irresponsible to recommend one to him just as it would be irresponsible to suggest a used Ferrari to somebody trying to buy a flash £20k car, despite the fact that, in theory, they are available for that..

remember that mnutz is not the one buying a car, his 'friend' in work is. we know nothing of the owner other than he currently drives an alfa and has upto £13k to spend.
he clearly knows the perils of alfa ownership, so no doubt he might have an idea about other manufacturers.

Whilst I agree that an Elise would be a fantastic car to buy, I think he's need to increase his budget a big to get one that he could live with on a day to day basis. For £10k you're looking at an S1 Elise which would be too raw for daily use in my opinion.

If it was my £10k I'd probably be looking at S2000's, they've got the power, looks and they're more reliable than a similarly priced Elise would be.
