Wow so the people who earn £18000.01 are now termed as rich !! I take it people on £15k are now the middle earners. I suppose its one way to lift people out of poverty.

Actually, if you read what he said, it doesn't imply that someone earning £18000.01 is rich. All it implies is that they are not poor, and that rich people earn some unspecified amount over £18k. He makes no comment about the 'middle earners', they could be 'getting richer' too. The rich could be on say £500k+ under his example.
