13.3" laptop please

You're right :D

thought yours had the 4200 series! :o

Represents even better value then!

Ahhh: Your's has Vista :p

Key differences between the 2 that I can see are:

3810tzg has the slower SU4100 processor (DC 1.3Ghz) but has Windows 7 64bit HP, HDMI and a webcam. No bluetooth

8371 has the faster SU9100 DC 1.4Ghz processor, has bluetooth but has Vista (spit), no HDMI or webcam.

my 8371 has a webcam :) lol

I think the difference is basically the CPU, HDMI output, fingerprint scanner, bluetooth and choice of OS.

They are essentially the same laptop just targeted at different markets.

This is my first encounter with switchable graphics, I'm now aware that you need the special version of CCC with the switchable profiles from the Acer webby....but I'm wondering if you'd be able to update the GPU drivers only, while leaving the CCC and profiles as they are?

or are the drivers also modified?

Yep, the 8371 does have a webcam - appears to be spec listing error when stating not.
CPU and OS are different, for sure, as is HDMI vs VGA and Bluetooth yay or nay.....pluses and minuses, I guess......let's not go down the fan-boy route :p

Either/or - both machines represent excellent vfm and I suspect are pretty unbeatable at this price point :) Huzzzaaahhh !

I'm not a fan-boy. But clearly the 3810tzg is the superior machine /joke :D

I'm trying to find out some more info on the switchable graphics thing. Hopefully it won't stop me playing some older games on it but if it does it's not a show stopper since this will primarily be a business machine for me :)

When I ordered mine, the website had the 8371 specs saying no bluetooth, no webcam and no fingerprint reader, but a quick search on the net confirmed these models do come with all those. So I ordered anyway and thought I'd count those as a bonus, and sure enough they were all there!

The only thing lacking is HDMI, and Win 7 but that's easily fixable. :)

Unless you really need HDMI, go for the 8371 - it was also £40 cheaper back when I ordered, no brainer really.

If i had caught sight of this thread when they were £330 I'd have ordered one then. I was late to the party but still happy with my purchase today of the 3810TZG for £379 which by all accounts they have plenty of stock of.

To get an 8371 now would be £429 + and on top of that I would need Win7 as I abhor Vista in comparison. That's quite a premium to get a slightly faster CPU and bluetooth!

The 8371 is still £349, there's also the 2.5% off voucher code to use with it to bring it down to around £340 with currently 91 available according to the stock system of the site :)

If anyone's thinking of ordering one now then definitely weigh up the 2 options first. Pro's and Con's of each for around the same price it would seem.

At the end of the day they are both the same laptop with slightly different options and in a different case

really?? Cool....sent you a message in trust ;)

I may well pick up another for the missus :D

Someone didn't read the thread properly... :p

Mine was actually for the mrs but I was and still am soo tempted to order a second, I am resisting though. Decided I'll try find a cheap pink laptop and case with flower designs on... give that to the wife n take the acer lol.

Just to throw in the mix, I am really impressed with the case - magnesium alloy, I believe ? in places......and the hard drive protection system is a nice feature too, although I tend not to drop my toys that often :p

Have to say, though, what has confused me slightly from the beginning is how come the supplier we have all been using for this is so notably cheaper than anywhere else. Not complaining, obviously, but.......

The other site had them for £330 aswel but sold out quick, and since put them back up for £430.

All this stock is basically last years, if you check the manufacture date I'm pretty sure its 2009 on all of them. They were aimed at business users and priced at around £800-£900, and at that price a fair number simply didn't sell. Great for us though as they have now dug out all the old stock and decided to get rid, so slashed the price by over 50% - win win really :)

Normally though when it comes to laptops like these, you are lacking something major like dedicated gfx, but you have to compromise somewhere - this seems to have it all (except hdmi). I've been telling my brother to sell his samsung nc10 ASAP and get one of these while it's still in stock. It simply destroys netbooks in every single department!

I have a Sammy NC10, if I get the missus one of these I'll sell the sammy to offset the cost :). My sammy has 2GB and Win 7 HP 32bit :)

Agreed :)

HDMI is something that would've been nice, but I suspect that I won't really need external output anyway. For me, all I want to do to 'enhance' is to put W7 on.......but don't have a spare copy :( That said, my work laptop has a W7 Pro COA on it (not being used, as they prefer XP  ).....but not too sure of the ethics of using that, if - indeed - it is even possible :p

Sorry to butt in, but if anyone can point me in the direction of a laptop/laptops that fulfil this spec, then please do :).

13.3" screen (HD)
3GB+ DDR3 RAM
half decent gfx
SSD (at least 64GB)
Nifty dual core processor (I really have no idea about capability/spec these days)
HDMI output
Windows 7

The laptop isn't going to be used for any gfx intensive games, just Football Manager and maybe Civilization. What I'm really looking for is core performance, a laptop that does basic tasks very quickly (internet browsing, music, video, skype, MSN, word processing, etc, often simultaneously).

Budget is anything up to £1,000 really, but I'd rather look a tad below that.

Ta :).

Wrong thread mate, but since you have posted in here... save yourself almost half your money and go for one of the Acers mentioned, if HDMI is not a must you can get:

Acer Travelmate 8371
Intel ULV Core 2 Duo 1.4Ghz (ULV SU9400, 3 MB L2 cache 800MHz FSB)
13.3" (Acer CineCrystal, 1366x768 HD, High Brightness, LED Backlit)
Win Vista 32 bit
4GB DDR3 1066MHZ
320GB WD 5400rpm
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 with 512MB Dedicated RAM
5-in-1 card reader (SD//MS/MS-Pro/MMC/xD-Picture card™)
3x USB 2.0 ports
Webcam
Bluetooth
Fingerprint Reader
8 Hrs+ Battery Life
1.7kg

Price: ~£345

Take out the HDD (very easy) and stick in one of these:

OCZ Vertex 2E 120GB 3.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive

Price: ~£185

Total: £530

If you really must have HDMI though, go for the other model mentioned in this thread, another great machine but an ever so slighter slower cpu and no bluetooth or fingerprint reader.

Pocket the change tbh... or even buy 2. :D

Okay, that's me ordered it! Pretty great deal including the small discount.

I hope it's as great as everyone says!

it is! :)

I havent even used it for uni work yet, just been playing CSS 24/7 haha.

Any one reccomend some other low resource games which should play on the 8371?

Does anyone have a reliable link for the AMD Drivers? I have all the drivers apart from this one.

It's taking forever on the Acer website.

Edit - Nevermind after 2 hours it finally finished. What a slow site!
