I've just had my second Asus PG279Q delivered, as I sent the first one back for backlight bleed and this one is just as bad. Are there any 1440p gysnc monitors that don't suffer as badly from this?

IIRC tftcentral covered all of those monitors. They open it up and show you the S/N of the panels.
But backlight bleed and glow is one of the downside that comes with IPS/VA, just try get lucky and settle for the one with the least possible

I was using tftcentral to look for reviews, I really like that site. I checked their review listing, though, and the only 1440p IPS gsync they covered was the Asus PG279Q.

In reading some of the other reviews, it seems there's two variety of panels AU Optronics M270Q008 V0 and AU Optronics M270DAN0, although there appear to be multiple revisions of each of those. The ASUS has the first one. I guess I need to read up on both of those.

I have an Acer XF270HU IPS 1440p freesync here, it's been moved to the second PC with the fury. I never did a backlight bleed test on it when I bought it a year or so back. I did one last night to compare it to my Asus PG279Q. The Acer is perfect, I mean, cherry picked for reviewers perfect. There is zero backlight bleed with brightness on full and even the IPS glow is minimal in comparison. Thing is, I must have lucked out. Reviews of the recent Acer gsync IPS seem to suggest they suffer from backlight bleed as much as other monitors.

Ooh had forgotten about the ViewSonic XG2703-GS might have to see if I can get my hands on one to see what it is like.

Problem with Acer its such a lottery - you can get some really nice panels from them or some really problematic or just poor QC panels :|

The Viewsonic and the Acer use the same panels.

There are only a small number of different panels used in all these monitors anyhow - the implementation and quality control can be widely different though :s

I was wrong, It's the Asus PG279Q and the Acer XB271HU that use the same panels. The Viewsonic uses the same panel as the Acer XB270HU. I can't imagine there's much difference in quality control, seeing as that will have been done by AU Optronics. I would imagine it's just luck of the draw all over.

I have a few Asus IPS monitors and they all bleed to lesser or greater extent. I think I agree with Hornestinger though, every monitor is a compromise. You have to choose the attributes you want most and the "defects" you can live with. Personally, I don't find the bleed to be much of an issue. It's only really noticeable if you look for it. But whatever floats your boat.

If I didn't notice it, I honestly wouldn't care. I was happy with my first Asus monitor until I played Mass Effect Andromeda and noticed the BLB, so I sent it back, just to get another that was just as bad.

In case anyone searches this topic in the future, I'll give some updates. After two Asus PG279Q, I've decided to give the ViewSonic XG2703-GS a go, it arrives later today.

That's disappointing for you. Got my PG279Q Thursday, sucks how temperamental they are.

Yeah, the 1440p, gsync IPS market is **** to be honest. There's only 4 options. The concern I had with the PG279Q is that if I eventually got a good one, if I ever had to RMA it I'd just get a bad one back. I'm not saying the Viewsonic will be much different, but if they're all bad, at least that one is cheaper.

Yeah, fair point. Luckily mine had no issues, but I'd have been extremely frustrated if it did. Felt like a risk buying it to be honest.

Yeah, I'm annoyed at the whole situation, I expected there to be more options. While there is 4 choices, the ACER and the Viewsonic use the same panel, so does the AOC and the ASUS. So, there's really only 2 options. That being said, you're picking the brand based on build quality of the monitor and, hopefully, quality control.

I'd be interested to hear what the viewsonic one is like, kinda interested in getting one

I'll be sure to post an update when it arrives later today.

It's great! Both my Asus had dead pixels and horrible backlight bleed. This one has no dead pixels and the faintest spot (cut a penny in half - sort of size) of backlight bleed at the top, in the middle. It's only just noticeable on 100% brightness, against a totally black background and in a pitch black room. When I properly calibrate the monitor I doubt you'll be able to see it at all. In short, I'm happy and I'll be keeping this one.

Sounds good. Going to wait till Monday to decide if I'm going to go with vega.
If not think I'll get this and a gtx 1080

I had a Fury and a freesync monitor, I too was waiting on Vega. It was disappointing so I jumped ship and picked up a monitor and a 1080ti, I don't regret it at all.

User pictures of backlight bleed always make me laugh. Here are my monitors:

Obviously the 2nd looks far worse and would be horrible to use. Except I only use one monitor and just changed the settings on my camera. And neither picture looks anything like real life.

I find in a pitch blank room, with a full black image on the screen, ISO 400 is the closest to what it looks like with the naked eye.

The Viewsonic is going back! After properly calibrating it the white balance is way off. The middle, where the calibration device was, is calibrated to 6500k (as expected). However, the left side 6000k and the right side is 7000k. The rain forest is out of stock on these now too, so I guess I'll try the Acer.

I'm now kinda thinking of sending it back as well now.
I'm noticing the yellow glow more now :(

might even try the acer as well since its still out of stock.

I think it's safe to say that 1440p, IPS, gsync monitors are just varying shades of ****.

It would be nice if there was more than 4 monitors to choose from in this category, freesync has much better options, just a shame the cards aren't as good.
