If I'm looking at a new monitor. I game playing everything from footy manager to BF1 to Fallout 4.

For gaming what's the better option, to get a 1440 res screen or a screen that will do 144Mhz refresh? Which one would give me a better gaming experience than what I have now 24" 1080p monitor. I feel my 980Ti is a little hindered by the screen I have and getting a new screen would let the GPU stretch its legs a bit more.

I'll be honest, I'm a little confused with screens, not sure what to be looking at hence the question about 144hz or 1440 resolution.

Budget would be in the 300 mark

Why not both? Look out for one in the MM might have to push your budget up slightly to meet both options.

Definately go for a 2560x1440p screen as the sharpness and image quality will woo you more than a higher refresh rate. I would say only look into a higher refresh rate if your playing fps games competitively, or you have a huge budget for a 1440p gaming monitor but these will probably cost you around £600+

What screen size are you looking at for 1440?

Just because it is 1440, 4k etc. it doesn't automatically mean it will be better for IQ.... When people say 1440 is sharper/clearer, they really should be saying what the PPI value is instead.... e.g. a 32" 1440 screen will have the same PPI as a 24" 1920x1080 screen thus look the same for sharpness/clarity but then with a 32" screen, you will most likely be sitting further back thus increasing the "perception" of better clarity/sharpness even further.....

And at the end of the day, it comes down to the end user, do you want superb motion clarity? Then 100+HZ is what you want (don't forget you will also need to be achieving the 100+FPS to get the full benefit of 10+HZ screens). Do you want the best IQ then you want IPS/VA and a high res./PPI display.

yeah looking to move up from 24" to at least 27" ort even 30"

So the general consensus is if possible go both 1440 AND 144 Hz but if not then 1440 as a starting point. Ok now to see what I can get bang for buck.

I'd really like to know what you consider / end up buying as I'm in a very similar situation. Coming from an ancient Samsung 226BW, I'm looking at a 27" IPS/VA panel at 75-100Hz+ but every time I start trawling through monitors around £300-£350 I end up at the £550-£600 mark very quickly :(

Aye me too. I feel I'm "missing out" just having a £300 budget. Madness I know. I'm also considering members market monitors too.

I was happy to spend £500 on a monitor with the theory that it should last me at least 5 years, hopefully towards 10.

Aye, I honestly thought I had a reasonable budget put aside when I first started looking at monitors... So from what I can see, there are options such as BenQ
GW2765HT / Acer BE270Ubmjjpprzx (rolls off the tongue!) and the Asus PB278QR which all come in around the £380 mark, but I think are all 60Hz and I think I'd like something a little more responsive. There is the Samsung C27FG70 which is 144Hz with the Quantum DOT tech, but the thread on here seemed to suggest "teething issues" and we are now at £400 (ignore 1080p). Next thing you know you're up at £500+ with panels like the Acer XF270HU which does tick all the boxes, has Freesync too (although I have a 1080 so no good for me) and then I start thinking about G-Sync for an extra £50ish to make the monitor last a bit longer and I have doubled my budget :(

Yeah that Dell you have is giving me headaches. Watched side-by-side reviews on youtube and its mighty impressive for colour, but I've got an IPS/VA panel stuck in my head right now :( wish I could see one in person. I know there is always new tech coming out, but it does seem like we are close to some potentially major new monitor tech with HDR and later OLED over the next couple of years? If I spent £350 on a monitor that lasted me 3ish years I can live with that, but a £500-£600 monitor, like you said, would need to last me 5-10 years and I'd be worried about missing out on some of this new tech (if it ever arrives / is affordable).

Yeah the Gsync tax is disgraceful. I can't actually believe the cost of monitors these days. Utterly mad. With the technology advances we have had in the last 10 years, a monitor hasn't really came down in price for tech advances (like GPUs do) but if anything has INCREASED in price!

I'll keep looking and report back when I get something, it might take me a few months though :/

I went from a 27" 1080p 120hz screen to a 24" 1440p 165hz screen, quite pleased with the increase in quality/sharpness. Also IMO you don't need to be playing twitch games to get the benefit from higher than 60hz, you'll notice the difference on everything really but more so with medium/fast paced motion so racing/fps etc will benefit quite a bit.

OLED and HDR have been "on the horizon" for years. My previous monitor lasted around 10 years before dying, and I bought my current one knowing that either I can replace it in ~3 years with a really nice one with all the new tech and if it still hasn't become affordable yet, I will just use it for longer.

It's got 7 x 4 star reviews so looks a good option, one reviewer states it can overclock to 70Hz which is nice. 32" is too big for the size of my desk, but I have been looking at the BenQ 27" version: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/benq...ing-flicker-free-monitor-black-mo-110-bq.html

I got excited to see OCUK promoting an Acer monitor sale this morning: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/moni...il&utm_term=0_c199b69777-6d8f9e726e-216559581

but majority of them are out of my budget, though for £100 more this has potential: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/acer...descreen-led-monitor-black-red-mo-095-ac.html
