£150 to spend.... but what on?

increasing voltage of the ram might cause global warming and economic collapse

Aawww poo didnt think of that LOL.

Well go ahead and get faster ram and take advantage of 2-3% increase (if that) in FPS in games! woohooo!

"timings mean sod all with ram" hm gotta disagree !
I have seen better benchmark scores from my own system using lower clock with tighter timings than higher clock with slack timings

I would be very surprised if it made even 1fps difference in any game.. I don't doubt its faster in benchmarks but that doesn't translate to the real world with ram timings, I've bought tighter ram myself in the past and been completely disappointed with no performance increase at all (that was in any way perceivable by a human being that is.. it was there is a 0.025s faster time in Super pi or something)

haha RANZID that's terrible, well good luck, you never did say what you had decided on however? or are you keeping this quiet to stop any more arguments lol.

Yup thats right matt, i tested it on an old A64 3000+ which liked tight timings back then and the difference was not noticeable at all. Only Fraps let me know there was about a 1% increase with tighter timings. Not sure how the new tech these days handle timings though.

from what i hear a q6600 should reach 3ghz quite happily i believe some members here have them running at nearly 4ghz, if you're really that worried about temps, try re-seating it as it may drop the temps a bit if that fails and you want a new cooler you got a few choices in the form of the TRUE/sunbeam/noctua & titan

Yup, I'm on 3.4 very easily with load temps of 65C. Only with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro! And I'm new to clocking.

2gb of ram? u want me to go down in ram?

also im on a zalman hs ..it did about 1/2 degrees difference over the stock cooler.. i was most put out.

imo 2GB is enough, but then again for the price difference you might aswell get 4GB so il agree there... but i got the impression you were stuck for money, and getting 2GB of decent ram would bring you closer to the 260 whilest maintianing a decent standard across the board.

i recommended the cooler as it would get you to, or even past 3GHz pretty easily. If you already have the cooler i recommended, and the difference was only 1/2C from the stock intel cooler, then id guess you seated it wrong.

im saying this and i dont know much about the cooler lol, but im going from what ive read, and ive heard its pretty decent?

well , after lookin at the 250 i think id rather wait and get the 260 when ive got the cash , as for the ram im going with the hyper as even tho ocz blade sounds nice and looks good.. the hyper has a tiny edge on timeings.. so unless theres a big difference between the 4gb blade set vs the 4gb hyper set then ill be going with the hyper.

as for the heatsink.. ive tryed re-seating it already.. but withought much luck, then again i am using Arctic silver from around 2003 :/

new HS compound im thinking .. is AS still tops?

also .. 65c .. .is that good for a q6600? .. i mean im used to the notion of 50c+ is bad..

that's not bad at load mate, mine at load on stock cooler at stock clocks is 55/56 so don't worry about them, and generally people don't worry about temps or unless you go over 70 at load, technically you can go higher but generally i don't think a lot of people like to go above 70.

so, its a tough one for me as i know clocking the 6600 should be fairly nice but im on 2.5 odd at the mo and idle is 42 load is 52 ish so id rather get some more cooling before i push it any further.

The idea ive had so far is:

new heat sink+fan for cpu so it can hit 2.7/2.8 ish

well, for a start, if 52ish is ur temp with the stock cooler then u have a pretty cool running q6600 already.. as long as it doesnt go above 62ish under primes hottest test then I would say its safe (intels burn in test for example hits 70-74 for me last time i tried while prime only hits 55-58). Getting an aftermarket cooler would be a nice addition for sure though.

SSD would be a nice upgrade (recently went SSD myself for my OS/apps etc) but its not something that will help in games apart from some loading times etc. Then again i would say go for ssd IF u dont find ur graphics card struggling with wat u play at ur resolution. u can always pick up a card in a few months if finances permit

My advice would be, overclock (ur going to see a nice boost:P), memory (sell old), heatsink IF uv got enough spare at the end, and either 1) graphics card if the games ur playing atm are struggling at ur resolution, or 2) SSD, the general improvement of responsiveness in windows and load times of apps/booting is very nice indeed.

TRUE+Fan = £50, memory divider and up the clock on the CPU
HD4850 = £100

Done.

If you can stretch it to £180, get some of whatever 4gb pc2-6400 ram is on offer this/next week (there's always one) and the memory will let you clock as high as a q6600 is likely to go.
