I'm novice at this stuff, trying to build a system from scratch for internet browsing, photo editing, and hopefully some gaming.

Please can anyone help point out any imbalances in my proposed set-up? (In particular, I know nothing about motherboards - is the one I found suitable/compatible/in line with everything else?

Thanks a lot for any help.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,471.80
(includes shipping: £0.00)

(Need Windows 10 Pro for logging into work server apparently)
(Have storage/storage is coming out of a different budget)

The gpu you've chosen is an Nvidia card but the monitor supports freesync which is used by AMD cards.
They will work together but you won't get the benefit of freesync from the monitor or g-sync from the card.

I'd also look a a slightly better psu, I know the new pascal gpu's are light on power usage, but 450w psu seems a little low.

If you're going to use the k sku CPU you really need to go for a Z170 motherboard to get the most out of it.

Also I think that case is micro ATX, so would need a smaller motherboard. :)

The K cpus don't come with a cooler, so would need one of those as well. And its borderline if that power supply will be up to the task, I believe the 1070 recommends at least a 500w :)

On top of everyone's points above, ditch the fans(£30) and spend it on a better case that comes pre-installed with fans and a better/higher wattage PSU.

Apart from the above, there's not many changes that you could make.

Case is obviously user preference.

Mouse/Keyboard are investments, had the normal M65 before but found it uncomfortable so switched to the Rival 300 and I'm much happier.
Could save a bit if you don't "need" RGB lighting.

That case is bit on the cheap side but I don't know how good it really is. With the cooler as Stulid pointed out you now just need the extras - Speakers, Headphones, Joystick, steering wheel and pedals :-) Oh and some games.
Andi.

Cooler.

The k skylake chips don't include one, raijintek do one for £15.

Thanks - had seen coolers mentioned, but that's all new to me - will add the Raijintek to the build list.

Thanks. Mouse and keyboard need to be 1) comfortable (so I'm gonna look into the differences re the Rival - thanks) and 2) capable of looking stylish enough for my wife to be happy using (her stipulation was "not bloody black and red!") - hence the RGB - hoping I can set them both up with cool white lighting.

Huh. You jest, but I'd not thought about speakers. Gah. I'll also look a bit more closely at cases. Just after something as minimal and "non-black-and-red" as possible.

Do you need windows pro really? Save a few £
I've been told by our work IT boys that I need Pro to log in to the work servers.

Thanks again for all the help.

I think it would be worth spending more on the case for the system as a whole, something not that much more, maybe from the Phanteks range? I use a Phanteks Ethoo Primo myself and I know that's expensive but the cheaper Phanteks cases are also very good. I have built loads of computers and I always tell the customers to buy Phanteks, the quality of the cases is great and a pleasure to build into.
Maybe something like one of these
