hi lads/lassses,

Quick one (I hope), I need to replace the projector in my local village club, the old one was out of date about 3 years ago and the bulb finally blew last week, so I've secured a small amount of cash for a new one, the screen to project onto is 1.9m wide by 1.4high. What should I buy and is there an ideal placement point for the unit to be situated for best picture etc..? the source would be a sky HD box so no need for 4k (if that's even a possibility)

Cheers in advance for any and all help :)

I imagine you'll just need the brightest one you can get which is 1080p, I guess it's a big fairly bright room?

What's the current mount arrangement? Is it on a ceiling mount upside down? Shelf etc.? You'll need to be aware of offset etc. if it's DLP and upside down.

ProjectorPoint is a good place to start, I'm not sure they're a competitor???

Yep brightest would be best, it's a large bar. Current mount is on ceiling mount and indeed upside down. The current projector; projects too wide and some of the picture is lost. Do newer projectors allow you to alter 'aspect' ?

You will not get a projector that allows the aspect to be altered. That being said, your issue here sounds more like you need a zoom, so you can fit the picture on the screen. This should be achievable at this price.

I have the Sony VPL HW40ES at home and would recommend it. However, it has been superseded and the new model is around £2K. I think your best bet is to get on AVForums and ask the same question! They have a lot of knowledge and tend to be very helpful over there.

To save yourself a lot of headaches get one with zoom and lens shift; it make placement of it soooo much easier.

Sounds good, does that have zoom? sounds like exactly what I need, £1500 is flexible so if I get what I need for slightly more then it's worth doing, the rugby/football brings in tonnes of business for us :)

thanks

this looks ok, we don't need a setup for high end audio philes, just drunken cornish rugby lads :D whatcha think - http://www.whathifi.com/epson/eh-tw6600/review

I would guess that most 'Home Cinema' projectors won't be bright enough, better off looking at a good 'Office' projector IMO.

Pick one with lens shift and good zoom and your placement issues should go away. NEC P502H maybe.

ok, current mounting point is 3-4m from the screen and about 20cm from the ceiling, I'd guess.

That calculator blows my old and stupid mind, bearing in mind we currently have something utterly awful surely anything would be a vast improvement?

Some office projectors are horrific (atleast compared to a cinema one) for fast motion or detailed colours in video being optimised to project high contrast solid colours which is a potential pitfall.

You "can" adjust the aspect ratio but it will mean losing some pixels somewhere.

Optoma HD142X might be worth a look - should be well inside budget, has over 2000 ANSI lumens which is about the minimum for bright environments and full 1080p.

Thinking about it a cheaper, brighter projector would probably be better for this environment. The HD142x is good but I don't believe it has lens shift, so you will rely on keystone correction to adjust the picture so it is square. Will this matter in a pub environment? Probably not, but it is a big no no in an AV room if you can avoid it.

The bigger issue will be fixed zoom. You will need to check that the throw fits your screen. For example, at 3m the diagonal image will be 2.2m. You will need to measure to see if this fits!

I'm so confused, I'll go take some pictures and measure some stuff, if it helps when we watch the rugby we have black out curtains drawn etc..

Yeah that is the downside of the 142 - sacrifices more advanced customisation options and range of input options for a cheaper price - but great if you are using it in an environment that suits that like a moderate size village/club hall - maybe not so useful for a home cinema setup in a spare room.

You are getting on a bit these days. Would hate to have you in my Battlefield squad now, Arthritic teammates are not helpful :D

Sure thing, grab some pics/measurements and we can have a play with the calculator for you. I've spent ages on the thing when I was speccing up equipment for the lounge refurb.

haha cheers mate :D

once I've finished this project we can look in the BF one

there is also a PT6000 with only 14h on the bay for just a £1000 an absolute bargain.

Trust me a bit huge but you will not get better for your money.

Here is the current setup, I measured it all and promptly got drunk and lost the details :p

fairly sure it was 3.9m to the screen, I was also discussing with the chaps last night that the screen is ancient as well, have there been any screen advances in the last few years which would mean we should invest in a new one?

thanks again :)

react 2.0 screen but maybe out of budget range, i've got an optoma hd 50 and it's watchable in sunlight (my screen is directly opposite a large south facing window)

Am I correct in stating you could have a much bigger screen ?

If so spend a £1000 on the projector and then buy a screen that will fit it.

That looks a lovely big room and why not use a lot more of it.
