£15k to £20k non depreciating impractical fun car?

I'd go low mileage S2000. Lower end of you're budget, and it looks like the values are appreciating slightly. It'll work when you want to drive it, and the engines a cracker. Not the last word in fun handling though.

Seriously good car, but when the competition is more exotic and driver focused I think it loses out somewhat. As a weekend only car I’d have an Elise.

Thanks all. It seems the Elise is probably the right way to go. Either S1 or S2. Won't start looking until later in the year as I have to sell my mums old house first. But will look into them.

Cheaper to get one in winter :p
Yep. Unfortunately my mums old house has only just gone on the market and some of that will be funding the car. So it will take a while to sell. Would love one right now but need to wait unfortunately.

Realistically I will probably start looking in summer, with a view to finding one around autumn heading into winter. At least this way I am not being impulsive and won't buy the first thing that comes up.

The Elise isn't the quickest thing on the road either (though they are still pretty quick). But other than a Caterham, you won't find anything this side of a racing car which handles as good.

Absolutely love my S2 Elise, owned it 16 years now, still puts a smile on my face, so basic and pure. Check out the SELOC forums for all Lotus stuff, great community.

Good luck finding one of those in budget - aren't most people asking over 30k for them now?!
At time of posting, I checked and pre haggle there were 4 phase 1's on autotrader £20k or below iirc. Phase 2 I think you're high 20's / early 30s as a starting point mind.
Almost bought a Phase 2 a long time ago at £12k, depressing :D

Things are getting expensive... you should see how much the Noble M12 costs these days, too!

Least the Noble is pretty special, the GTT wasn’t exactly some amazing car, just pretty decent.

I also remember when an R34 GTR could be bad for around 20k, wish I earned what I do now back then!

Same for a lot of things, Escort Cosworth, F355, older 911s.

Remember around the old financial issues of 2008/2009 you couldn’t give Clio V6s away, could get a phase 1 for not much more than 7k at one point.
