16GB iPhone - Out today!

Just as well they didn't lower the price of the 8GB model as I only bought one last Saturday and I would have been really angry!

Does anyone know if this extra 8gb on the iPhone is purely for music/media content?

Or will there be extra space for 3rd party apps as well?

Slightly random question. How big is a 1 hour 30 movie encoded for playback on an iPhone at good quality? And would watching one of these rape the battery, so to speak.

It's for anything. Music/Videos/Apps etc.

The battery lasts quite a while, but watching a hour an a half movie would eat up the battery yeah.

Movies at good quality and a hour and a half long are usually 700-900mb ish.

Oh right, i read earlier on here that the 8gb is partitioned, and that there is only about 300Mb for the OS and any other apps you wish to install. The rest is for music/movies etc.

Is this wrong?

Yeah that is right.

But with jailbroken iPhones you can move the apps if you run out of space on the 300mb partition.

For my 16GB iPod touch, I use 2-pass H.264 encoding with Nero Recode. I aim for around 100MB per TV episode (usually from Simpsons/Family Guy DVDs). The quality is more than acceptable so 500MB for a film should be fine. My commute is about 90 minutes each way and I've yet to run out of battery.

Haha I just bought an 8Gb iPhone. I'd be pretty annoyed if they started chopping them out. But luckily it looks like the 16Gb is just a new addition.

I'm going to guess the 16Gb one will be around £349. Anyone want to buy an 8Gb legacy iPhone? :P

This is unexpected :)

They're advertising the 16GB iPhone on the store, but I can't find a way to add it to a cart?

The UK store still hasn't gone down as far as i know, so don't think its actually on the UK store yet. 'tis on the US one, and that one went down between about 12.30-1.30GMT.
