I think the car is to be in my mums name with a yea or two no claims.

i havnt really much idea as I havnt bought a car for enarly two years now

Ideas ive given him are:
fiesta 1.25
306 1.9 diesel
1.2 16v corsa
focus??
astra 1.4 16v??

thanks in advance :D

You will use it more than her. Play by the rules, you will be rewarded in the long run.

I'd go for the Fiesta 1.25 tbh, nippy & reliable.

It's for his little bro, not him, he's 19 (it's all in the username...).

Fronting is like rape though. If he is going to be using it more than her, then he should be the main with her named, if she doesn't have a car and wants one and have him drive it occasionally then it's fine for her to be main.

Off the topic of fronting/rape, 2-3k can get and decent small car really. If you don't want French, then I'd say the Fiesta is a safe bet. The 306 if non turbo will shift about the same as any 1.2 petrols. It is however a much bigger and nicer car (IMO). I have owned a 306D, and they can shift (but you have to be able to drive) and are reliable, only problem he might have if he is a petrol head is road stickability, on stock 13" steelies they don't hold the road well at all. Also they are all too easy to readline constantly, due to having a low limit (4.5k rpm), I managed to blow one engine up in mine. :D

The 1.25 Fiestas are poor on insurance because so many people stacked them having got free insurance deals with them.

Having said that they're good cars.

NCB is useless until you're about 21 anyway.

It made about £50 difference on a Mini Cooper S whether I had no NCB or 1 years NCB.

Age 18: First year I paid £2200 for insurance
Age 19: 1yrs NCB it was £1200
Age 20: 2yrs NCB it was £600
These are for a 2.0 Mondeo.

To get insured under a parents name is £1200 per year on a 1.0 Micra, so I imagine around £1500 for the Mondeo.

Therefore, this year is the year where I start saving money by having my own policy. Sure it wasn't easy to begin with but I am pleased I have done it now.

mine was 509quid with CIS at 17 in dads name and now is 428quid with NFU taken when i was 18. (all this fully comp protected no claims the lot) and when i come to insure for another year now im 19 should be under 400 :p. The car barely gets used i dont have it at uni anyway

1 year NCB took about a 25% off my last policy :/

Maybe it's because the Cooper S is such a fast car, but with Bell it was something like £2000 for me at 18 (no NCB) and about £1900 for me at 18 (pretending I had 1 years NCB). Both were with my parents as Second & Third drivers (adding my dad as a GP made a colossal difference) and assuming I passed my test 1 year and 4 months ago. Perhaps at 19 with 1 years NCB, it will go down significantly???

In the grand scheme of things £2000 does seem like an amazing deal for CS insurance though! I think putting your occupation as "Uni living away" makes a big difference as they know you won't be driving it most of the time.

That's balls. These are my insurance costs with my old 1.6 Focus.

17, 0NCB - £1550 fc
18, 1NCB - £820 fc

So yes, as you can see having 1ncb did quite a bit to be honest.
