The 306 is a good call though. The diesel engines are superb and if you do a high ammount of miles a year, which you probably will in your first car as you will be going all over the place in it, the economy of especially the HDi is nice.................................I cannot believe anybody has not mentioned the KA! Nippy, chuckable to a degree, reasonable looks if you like the shape etc.

306 is indeed a good call, and yeah the HDI engine is fairly good compared with the other cars lousy little petrol engines.

KA though, if you have a penis not really an option i'm afraid. :o

I know they are popular with the ladies but they are good cars.

I wouldn't have one though.

Puma yes, KA no. (I'd only have the Puma due to 1.7 engine and chuckabillity).

What is this "chuckability" you keep going on about? You can "chuck" any car around a corner!

Yes basically. I've never thrown a 1.25 Fiesta into corners but I ear they are better handlers than the bog standard 1.1 106/Saxo that bodyrolls.

there's a difference between bodyroll and handling. My old 205gti would bodyroll quite a bit, but the handling was excellent.

On a more related note, the Fiesta handles very well, even with the skinny tyres.

I suppose it's each to their own. I'd have the 1.25 Zetec over the 1.1 desire Saxo but I would not have a Zetec S over a VTR/VTS.
Nor would I, but I wouldn't recommend any of the latter three as a first car either.

306 HDI
Fiesta 1.25
Own insurance policy!

Two great first cars imo, just take your pic depending what you want from a car. Want a decent size, not painfully slow car capable of doing everything you ask of it, 306 (little bias here as it was my first car!). Want a small city hatchback which is nippy around town but imo, woeful on motorways/longer trips but is indeed going to cost you less to purchase get the fezzer.
