1700X and 1800X have a +20'C Temp offset, 1700 unaffected.

1600X is going to have this same offset.

Having not taken the plunge yet due to rubbish motherboard availability, what sort of temperatures are peeps getting at the moment when idle and under load. Do I need to take the radiator out my car to cool one. :D

I am in the same boat, awaiting motherboard but swaying between Ryzen models. This temp issue would really bug me with an x variant.

Same i don't want my fans going crazy because the CPU is over reporting the temperature...

It's no biggy - you just adjust the fan curve to compensate.

Seems like a bit of a lazy shortcut though? At lease one user on this forum has returned his 1700x for a refund as he presumed it was faulty based on the insanely high idle temp. Accurate temp reporting and a proper fan profile would be much preferable. How much extra work can it be to provide one additional profile for the X chips??

I imagine most temp monitoring programs will soon be updated to subtract 20c from the tCTL value for the Ryzen X variants.
