Thinking of getting rid of the supra getting a bit bored of it and I fancy something that I could take a track day once in a while without having to worry if I'm going to cook the brakes/fluids/oil/tyres after 2 laps.

172 - looks like a shopping trolly but supposed to be about the hot hatch in my budget

teg - I like the look and these are supposed to be one of the best handling cars ever but i'm not sure if i could live with the noise and lack of creature comforts

I guess what I want to know whats the best 172 model to get and whats the equipment levels like on a teg and how hot/noisy does it get ?

also any other suggestions for ~5k?

Bored of a supra? really?

I'd go for a 172 just simply because i'm not amazingly keen on the looks of the DC2 (give me a DC5 anyday though). But if you do like the looks of it, definately go for it over the 172.

I'm having the exact same quandary at the moment. Really want a DC2 but everything else aside - not sure I could live with commuting in it.

Then of course, a JDM one is an extra £300 on insurance and more in fuel too...

You missed 3 vital letters from that sentence, FWD!

I'd definitely go for the Integra if you plan on doing trackdays.

Have you ever been in a Integra. I would be willing to bet it is more refined and comfortable than the clio

There isn't much sound deadening in an Integra and sat on the motorway at 80mph the revs are around 4.5-5k, it's not quiet.

The Recaros in the Integra are very comfortable though and the Clio interior is ugly.

ive only been in an integra SiR (Johnny Coupe's) and I was absolutely blown away by its ability to corner and stop... granted I think his had willwood 4 pots on the front and some trick jap suspension, but it was absolutely superb

What about cabin noise @ 70/80 on the motorway though? I've not been in an Integra, but I wouldn't have thought it would be great?

Whereas I didn't find the Clio too bad, better than mine at least

I would be suprised. The Clio is more refined and comfortable than the FTO, and FTO v Integra comparisons always criticised the FTO from a performance perspective of being too 'soft' compared to the Integra.

Drive them both and see which you prefer.

Seems like the obvious thing to say, but with these two cars it's not going to be easy to find the better car on a normal test-drive - unlike in a Passat v Mondeo situation.

You either need a salesman/private seller that just doesn't care (unlikely), or if you've got a mate who has one, convince him you're not going to prang it and ask him for a go:p

Although I think we can agree that the Integra handles better, so a normal test-drive may be enough.

just what i was going to say - finding a 172 to have a go in shouldn't be too hard but an integra in the spec i want the closest is over 100miles away and the chance of the seller letting me take for a thrash is probably pretty slim, hence I want to know if its worth looking at one, so far sounds like it is

I'm sure its more comfortable and quieter than my car anyway. :D

I used to own a 172 and now own a UKDM DC2.

The seating position in the 172/182 is very poor it feels like you are sitting on it rather than in it.

In the Teg everything is in the perfect place imo, the gearchange is precise and the seating position is perfect and the recaros are very comfy indeed even on a long commute.

I commute daily in my teg and dont find the noise/rev issue a problem. Drive on the motorway at 75 and you are at 4k revs.

Drive above 80 and you are nearing vtec which means you are reallly going to drink the juice, ive found 75 the perfect cruising speed on the motorway and it will also return good mpg due to not being in vtec.

Everything in the teg is electric and if you get a UKDM most have aircon if you really want it.

For a track car it definately has to be a Teg, the Clio suffers from the rear end going quite "light" when changing direction quickly. The teg has perfect 50/50 weight distribution and doesnt suffer this problem.

The brakes are better in the teg nd obviously the suspension and chassis are far superior too.

Id say if you just wanted a fast hatchback then id pick the 172 but if you want something that is raw, is a real drivers car without silly aids and want to track it then its got to be the teg.

If you want to know anything about either feel free to ask and i'll do my best :)
