Hi Everyone

I have been going through the forums for the last few days looking for inspiration for my new gaming pc and could use some expert help. if i get some fast help on this i will be ordering in the morning. and i will post some screenies / benchmarks upon build completion.

Requirements:

0) i have an oculus rift dev kit 2 on its way. (possibly irrelavent lol)

1) Water Cooled: all internal, happy for cpu only, wont be overclocked but I would like a fairly quiet machine.

2) just got a 4k 40" screen, interested in upgrading within 6 months with a second gfx card, so SLI capability is a must. starting with 2x gfx cards is not out of the question , will the price drop that much for a second card in 6 months or so ? or by the time the consumer rift releases in the summer ?

3) Ive always been on the Nvidia side, would like to stay there unless theres a very compelling reason i have missed. same for Intel.

4) Need win 8.1, 512 gig ssd and a 2 gig hd.

5) would like a gigabyte MB for the free upgrade thingie.

6) would prefer if its using the latest chipset and socket.

7) Build budget is flexable if you can justify it.

the Rig will be mostly for rift dev work / gaming: eve, wow, fallout 4, star citizen. movies and some audio work. i hope the requirements are not too limiting and i apriciate you taking the time to read this.

Thanks in advance,

Tommy.

Idleman missed a few things.

The Free upgrade warranty is only on BK edition motherboards, which the Gaming 7 isn't part of..

Watercooling (AIO) isn't quoted than air cooling (high end) it better (for overclocking) and for looks/airflow. Do you still want an AIO? Or a very quiet cooler?

Do you want a window to see your lovely rig? Or is quietness king?

Hey,

Window doesnt matter,

i think i want to go with AIO water cooling, at a later date i might need an extra boost via overclocking it.

doesnt need to be quiet all the time, just when playing a movie,

is there no way i can maybe drop a graphics card and stretch to a x99 chipset with ddr 4 ?

thanks a lot guys for taking time on this, im researching on each component and option as i go here. looking interesting so far.

looks good idleman, would you buy that one on that budget ?

Not really up on Oculus Rift dev, so not to sure about the PC requirements.

If you can afford it, why not. But I would likely go for the Z97 build.
I just sold my X79 chip(3930k) because I could'nt get a replacement RIVE board. It was more than I needed Cpu wise, but I got it cheap. So now have an i7 Z97 build, as they gave me the Asus Maximus VII Formula as a replacement. So with my 7990, I am more than happy and it does all I require of it, gaming.
You just have to weigh up which will benefit you more in the long run and are you likely to use your system for more intensive applications in the future.

Well i'm in the same boat as you but with a slightly less budget, i'm definately leaning towards a X99 system, that cooler i've read a lot of good things about, so would get if in stock but if you can't wait the H105 is excellent too.

Also buying Kingston 2x8GB DDR4 will save you around £26 and leave you with 2 slots if you want even more RAM in the future, yes put the savings from my suggestions towards another 970.

ok good call on the cpu, i will go back upto 2 graphics cards now with that saving.

but whats your opinion on the system ? especially the x99 over old socket - ddr 3 etc,

and regarding the cooling,
according to http://www.frostytech.com/top5_liquid_heatsinks.cfm

the nepton 240 is on top,

if it was in stock here, would you be using that instead ?

As said above if you were going X99 the 5820k is the best choice. On gaming benchmarks its hardly a single % behind the 3930k.

In your situation I'd be going Z97. Grab a 4790k and a Gigabyte BK motherboard to get the free upgrade warranty. CPU for CPU in gaming terms the 4790k is actually BETTER than the 'mooor corez' 5820k. Not to mention the Z97 platform us much cheaper.

As for DDR3 vs DDR4, there is VERY little difference between the two in real terms. The ONLY advantage of DDR4 is you MAY be able to use it next time you upgrade BUT. (Don't quote me on this) I feel DDR4 will have massively improved frequency's and timings by then. Not to mention a fall in price. For your uses I'd be using 16gb..

That cooler would be my choice too, price and performance are bang on.

I would take a look at cases too, I'm sure there much better than the 550D out there. If silence is key the Fractal R5 looks amazing. I'm not sure if OCUK will ever stock it as they don't receive good service from fractal.

Thoughts on all this?

thanks for the reply doom, im starting to get a feel for whats going on in terms of cpu / motherboards etc, i only ever get into this in depth every few years when its time to get a new pc, so im perpetually rusty lol.

by going X99 i assumed that i would get a possible upgrade path 2 years down the line for both cpu and ram, while saving on the cost of a new mb. thats kinda why i was so set on it, i do see that there is no real performance benefit for my usage pattern, theres probably an element of just wanting the latest kit too.

as for cases, ive got a new glass desk on its qway and i would love to get a
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-037-IW&groupid=2362&catid=2293 to go with it, but again its out of stock, are there any other good cases out there using glass ?

thanks again for the research on this guys, gona get a couple of hours sleep before i order and check for any last minute updates or suggestions. will let you know what the final build is, tbh im not 100% what way its gona go yet, maybe if i get the mrs a new dish washer i can bump the budget up a bit lol.

What ram are you looking at, the DDR4 is all quad channel.

I put the 5930k in so the OP can see what he can get for his money. Obviously, if he does'nt need that much Cpu grunt and the extra cores, then he can drop down to the 5820k.
As far as the AIOs go, there isn't to much to choose between them. I have the H100i and can't fault it.

3) Ive always been on the Nvidia side, would like to stay there unless theres a very compelling reason i have missed.

One compelling reason is that many games run faster at 4K on AMD hardware. A 295 X2 (£530) will often match or beat SLI 980s (£800+), let alone the 970s spec'd so far.

I wouldn't go X99 unless you know Oculus Rift will need 6+ cores, it's not worth the price hike IMO.

Kingston Dual Channel DDR4 that stulid specced me in my own thread on page 2 of this forum.

Blame stulid then, the thread title was spec me an AMD FX 8 Core system and a X99 system, I wasn't asking for any Z97 spec so not sure why the hell he was speccing DDR3 RAM, geez easy to get confused with all the mixed messages in that thread.

Those neptons are always top because they run higher fans speeds, which is why they're also always bottom of the list for noise.
