After a fruitless google search, can someone explain what '=/=' means?

Someone has used it in the context 'Faith =/= creationism'.

Am I right in assuming that it simply means 'does not equal'?

Thank you in advance, and I appologize for making a thread out of it.

It seems to me that someone couldn't find the does not equal sign so they used that instead, which just looks silly. Either that or they were talking about railways.

It's quite common to see that handwritten as a dash through an equals sign as a simple way of saying not equal.

EDIT: I very much doubt someone referring to something as is the context of the OP would use a programming term (!=, <>) :rolleyes:.

≠ - this is what it would looks like as one character.

Ah yes. I understand now, his laziness confused me!

A passing don can now delete or lock the thread if they wish as it has served its purpose. Thanks again :)

Edit = Ty Vixen!

Why? I do it all the time :D Although admitadly most people I use != to don't know what it means :p

to me,

Faith =/= creationism

says

faith is equal to creationism, perhaps pertaining to the requirement of faith to believe in something as implausibly insane as creationism.

Vixen is right, there is a notation in handwriting when you put a line through an equals sign, as she's shown :)
