Got the hardware itch, 1800X running stable at 4GHz to 8700K a silly upgrade ?

I game at 2560x1440P and 4K so not exactly CPU limited resolutions, GPU is a Titan Xp, Do the odd bit of Premier Pro.

Wait 2 months and get a 2800X. Less upheaval and although performance figures aren't out yet chances are the multithreaded will still be better than the 8700K

So you don’t need really need any more CPU power for gaming, you do actually use the multithreaded benefits of Ryzen but want to swap?

Seems expensive and pointless.

At the very very best, it's a sidewards step. There could well be a good argument for it being a backwards step.
As it happens i posted up a Firestrike Extreme bench yesterday, as you can see, from the 8700K below my entry, you would need to be at or above a 5Ghz clock to beat a 1700 at 3.95Ghz using the same GPU.
As Firestrike Extreme is a 2560x1440 bench, it gives you a very good view of the sort of result to expect form CPU and GPU combinations at the res you game at.

It seems like you have been hit hard with the upgrade itch Dicehunter :D

Both those CPU’s are considered top of the line, and since you also game at 1440p and 4K, I don't think it’s worth it.
If you still insist on upgrading, why not wait for the Ryzen 2800X and see what it offers.
You can just swap the CPU out (update bios first), without investing money in anything else.

I went from a 1700 to 8700k and the difference is certainly noticeable if you are aiming for 144hz. Is it worth the cost? It was in my eyes, I got tired of the lack of single core strength in ryzen.

At 1440P though ? I can see the difference at 1080P but from what I'm now looking at there's only a hairs difference at 1440P.

And yes I now realise I answered my own OP question by actually looking at benchmarks :p

With a score of 14582, i'd say there was quite a bit more than a "hairs" difference Dicehunter :p
Plus of course, anything you do in Premier Pro or Lightroom (if you use it) will blow an 8700K out of the water.
Wait until the 2800X is with us, absolutely no need at all to go backwards with an 8700K.

It depends on the game - if you are running one based on a crap engine, then potentially yes if minimums improve a decent amount even at qHD,and its the few games where if you went from Haswell to Skylake you would also see a decent improvement. However, that is not so common,so TBH I would argue its not worth it and you could always plonk in a Ryzen+ CPU soon,or wait until next year and upgrade to Ryzen 2.

Depends on the game tbh. But yes also at 1440p I can see a difference. Some games just hate ryzen.

Lightroom has got better but it’s still rubbish at multithreaded utilisation for many things.

The 8700k beats 16 Core threadripper and 18 Core Intel i9s in a fair few areas.

Waste of money, but sometimes just having something different is worth it. Overclocking is a bit more fun on an 8700K as well.

2xxx ryzen might get Intel to cut prices if you can wait. If Ryzen 2xxx overclocks well then that might suffice as a cheaper upgrade?
