im sure gibbo said it was something many of us were afraid to do so my guess is replacing the stock cooler or watercoling

Pretty sure it will be that

MK-26 Air cooled 290 flashed to 290x for £440 with BF4 and OCUK tech-labs WC 290 flashed to 290x with BF4 for £475.

Why on earth would you say that? AMD did say they'd be hitting the market around late Novemeber. Damn sight more likely than a Dual GPU'd 290 this side of Christmas. If they leave it too long it won't be worth vendors making them.

Think gibbo said only a few days ago that there is no chance of non-ref 290's this side of christmas and that if there were any they would have them on order already and they don't. He's speaking to AMD/AIB's this week iirc.

does seem strange. surely amd must know the stock cooler is holding sales back, you only need to see the people on this site gagging for them

Gibbo said sales are fine and were actually increasing, don't put too much stock in the forum hivemind. That said I bet he is not ordering more than he needs. ;)

Amd charge the most to the companies for reference cards so i guess more money is made this way. As the demand is still high for the 290 delaying the release of none reference cards Makes them more money
