Looking back at some of the stuff I watched in the 1970's I think it was a great time for scifi. Possibly the best? Have there been better decades?

Alien
Star Wars
Silent Running
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Invasion of the Body Smatchers
Westworld
Rollerball
The Andromeda Strain
Mad Max
THX 1138
Superman (Christopher Reeve)
Soylent Green
Demon Seed
Star Trek the Motion Picture
Logan's Run
The original Planet of the Apes trilogy
The Black Hole
The Omega Man
Solaris
Capricorn One

Yes Aliens was fantastic. But it was a sequel to the 1970's classic :)

I know it's not the 70's, but have to mention Forbidden Planet 1956.

I must have seen this when about seven or eight, and it blew my tiny mind.

Even now it holds up with some of the effects and the story is great (nicked from The Tempest).

Forever turned me on to sci-fi.

I find the 80s sci-fi, especially the remakes or sequels to 70s classics, far more watchable - the 70s stuff just doesn't hold up well for me, even back closer to the time. Dialogue is often laughable, acting hammed and special effects rarely stand up - while the 80s classics often stands up surprisingly well today.

Jaws
The Deer Hunter
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Pink Panther
The Omen
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Moonraker

I think the complete opposite of that.

I suspect it has something to do with the space race. There was always something going on back then, now even though there are many more rockets being launched, they are just for satellites mainly. I think there is an apathy for it right now. People seem more interested in fantasy magically powered people and identity politics.

Arguably, 2001 released in 1968 is the best Sci fi film. Not sure I agree but the 60's also saw some good ones.
