I'm not sure how ratings have changed, but a funny storey, my exes little brother has just come of age, and wanted a pegeot or however It's spelled 1.6, (one of those girly cars) and he was getting quotes of 3k plus....

106, typical first car, typical first car quotes. My first car was an Escort, Fiestas were much more to insure at the time.
As Janesy said, the 1.4 is a bit of a small engine for a car of this size. The 1.6 is the sweet spot.
Having my parents as named drivers helped. Other than that, not sure really. I did notice however, that my friend's 1.25 Fiesta was actually more expensive for me to insure. I think statistics must be on the Focus's side on this one.
I have a 1.6 Mk2 which was 7 on the old ratings and 10 on the new ratings.
Probably still quite cheap I'd think.
Trouble is, they only come with the antique Ford 1.3 gutless engine, which is neither modern nor effecient nor powerful. On the plus side though, they seem to be bombproof and fixable with a big hammer
For a 1st car, you'll usually be taking pot luck, lots of finger crossing and hoping it wont break.
If you're buying private, walk away from *anything* that smells remotely funny. Strange noises, too much rust, anything that doesnt add up, too much cab wear for the mileage its done etc.
Aim to pick up a car from someone who's garaged it and taken care of it, ideally some old grandad who's getting rid because he's stopping driving....

They're all crap. It was made of cheese, bits fell off all the time and was horrific in pretty much every way. It did 55mpg though.
