1st crash.

Looks like you did very well for a first year team.

I was there on Saturday and my mate judged your car. Said you were all very keen to learn which was a big positive compared to some of the other teams

:D

We're all ecstatic with the results. For those that don't know:
-21st overall, it's a bit of a who's who ahead of us.
-6th UK team.
-18th in the Enduro.
-2nd in the Economy, using 2.5 litres of fuel. Lord knows how we did this, we ran out of fuel in a mock enduro in test then extended the tank from 5.7 to 7.7 litres. Adam Lowe - now of Oxford Brooks - who designed the intake doesn't think that's even possible.
-And the bit we really wanted; we passed scrutineering without having to re-queue, then finished every event.
-16th in the sprint.

Nice to have met griffo_001 in the camp site last night too, I tried to find you in the pit sooner but only found the car.

I'll try and get hold of some photos, we had a media team. :D

Edit:
Oh, and I can do the accel. faster than the egress.

Another edit:
Our neighbours of Liverpool University managed to produce a nice looking car by Sunday, I was very impressed with the students and the car, particularly the bodywork, just a shame it only made it to the enduro. Could stand to loose your faculty advisor though, he's a complete arse head. Rocked up late with a bare-ish chassis and immediately announced he was there to beat us, then tried to say that's how all the good teams do it, except the 2009 winners followed us through scrutineering with a tested car on Thursday morning.

Yet another edit:
I just noticed the set-up bars in your photo are the exact set we borrowed, I was wondering who we scrounged them from.

Good work - How far is the Endurance in total ? It's that solid 90 bend you added that helped.

Have you got a remote tank hidden in the car ? :p

I'm still gutted about 2004 when we didnt get chance to really use the car at the event :( Despite several of our team doing 80+hour stints without sleep.

22k isn't it? Was slightly more because each lap was 1.003k. We could have done 2 more enduros with our tank.

The solid(ish) 90 and a bit of work on the map really did help. Also Aled driving like my grandmother might :p.

Edit:
The Gratz 1A crash was a bit strange, does anyone know why he just plowed on through the fence in a straight line? Good job that Jag got in the way else he'd have landed in the fuel tent.

There's like 50ft of run off after the box, and a choice of loads of soft(ish) hay bails to hit, yet he chose to park it upside down on the bonnet of a Jag over a fence directly on from the box. Either the steering also failed or the driver did.

We were waiting to go in the play pen when it happened. A swarm of photographers were on the scene in seconds.

Have you got any links? We'd just started the enduro when it happened, you get extra points for a video :D . The other other Graz Class 1 can lost a wheel too

Unfortunately our almost-working SXV decided she couldn't be bothered to do more than 4 laps on the endurance, possible cause being the exhaust melting the starter motor cable and shorting, eventually leading to the battery dying, which would explain why she wouldn't crank when Ben tried to restart.

It was gutting end to a great weekend: had we done the fuel economy and enduro we would have been in the top 20 with ease. Because we didn't we finished 35th. C'est la vie I guess.

Over the next week we plan to find/fix the fault, and at some point map it better, as the map is rich as you like low down, so it stutters and lurches at low speeds.

Some data we pulled off the car from our 4 laps of the enduro: Lap1 1.11.3, Lap2 1.11.4, Lap3 1.11.3, Lap4 1.14.9, Lap5 DNF. Our single completed sprint lap was a 1.07 before penalties, and the second lap was SO much faster and cleaner, it was gutting that she stalled on the final hair-pin. She could have done a sub 1 minute we reckon, its just a shame we can't prove that :(
Ben also pulled 0.98G in acceleration, 2G in braking and 1.5G in the corners, with a top speed of 67MPH
All done in second gear without really pushing the car

Next up is a "demo" run up Prescott Hill Climb showing off Formula Student with 6 other teams. We need to get in contact with them to organise a trophy for it..... Not that we're competitive or anything  :p

And the timing board from the endurance, shamelessly ripped off Facebook:

As I said, our driver insists he wasn't pushing the car at all, he didn't even bother using anything other than second gear

The endurance usually ends up being a reliability test anyway, no point going fast and breaking the car.

I think I saw your car going around the sprint on saturday, sounded really lean when the driver opened the throttle. Did it have any fuel tip-in enrichment?

There's a reason the race for the cars that qualify 41+ or don't qualify but enter the endurance anyway is called the Wacky Races amongst the marshals :D

The mapping is terrible, and it was backfiring almost constantly on the sprint, which fixed itself for the enduro, but if you saw us on the skid pan you'd know what I mean about the low end mapping. The best time we did on the the skid pan was a 5.3 with a burnout off the line and plenty of revs all the way round, eventually crossing through the final 2 cones backwards :D Video to follow

I watched that too :D

Shame really as it looked decent apart from the lack of ability to have a smooth throttle

Then you'll have heard the shouts from all of us when fired first time after the stall, same as in the sprint.

Having done a mammoth read end dissemble, engine, spool et al out, clutch and starter swap, and rebuild again in 3 hours, seeing her on the start line, and watching her fire on the button with no help first time after the rebuild is a credit to the team, and every time she stalled and restarted the shouts of joy were deafening. And then Ben gave it the beans of the line and I still can't hear properly :D Brought a tear to the eyes of most of our team

EDIT: Unless you were talking about the Wacky Races, which was disappointing I hear (I was driving to bath to rescue the van keys from one of our guys who'd driven home with them  #fail)

Didn't most of the wacky races run out of time to start?

We - somehow - made it into the end of the top 30 group. Was probably faster running out there on our own, didn't have to keep pulling over to let people past.
