Me and my kid are planning a pc build instead of upgrading his current one. We probably won't put it together ourselves but want to choose the components.
Budget wise will be £1000 - £1200ish.
All he knows at the moment is he wants a Nvidia GPU and probably an i7.
I know its probably a broad question, but where do you start .which bit do you choose 1st and build round. Are some brands better than others ect. .. thanks .

Yeh, you're opening post suggests you don't really know what you're looking for.

You don't build around anything, you decide a maximum budget which you have. and figure out what it will be used for.
I'm assuming a gaming system?
Are you wanting to game at 1080p resolution or higher?

For example an i5 or AMD equivalent will save some monies for a better graphics card.
An i7 whilst nice will really eat into the budget where that extra money will be better put into a graphics card.

Why not phone Overclockers and they can custom build you one.

What monitor do you have
He's been using a small samsung TV for the last couple of year. He's got a decent keyboard, mouse ,headset ect. So that will see him right for a while till he gets a monitor. I've been playing around with there websites build tool I just always end up way over budget ... just after a starting point to build from ..

His pc has a i5 4670K 3.40GHz @ 4.50GHz Ivybridge in it at the moment. What would be a good upgrade from this. It will be 1080p gaming to start with. But would like it to be able to handle more if required in the future.

A Ryzen system would give you better value for money. A Vega 56 is also a good gpu for 1080p and it includes a couple of games.

Not sure how much ocuk would charge to build, but here is an idea of a build+monitor. You can add a Windows key later on. Think you get about 30 days before the watermark pops up.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,077.11 (includes shipping: £13.20)

You could always just go with a new gpu and see how the i5 holds up. The Vega 56 above or a GTX 1660 ti etc are around the same price.

What power supply make/model is in the current pc ?

Decent spec for 1080p and within your budget but with that CPU and mother board you could always upgrade the gpu in the future. Has the i7 and Nvidia he mentioned he wanted

@Lee32uk Yeh that's a better build.
If I'd change anything I'd not get the secondary spin drive and get the same monitor in the 27inch variety.

Hard drives are cheap so you can always add another one later

Missing a case and cooler though.

Assumed he might be using the case he already had, forgot the cooler though haha

Might be a bit hard for ocuk to build it without a case though, assuming he goes for that option :)

You could go with a cheaper board though to offset that.

He might want to build it himself if we can help him out a little, obviously it can be a little daunting but with there being so many guides nowadays on youtube (not the verge's effort) he might want to give it a go and save a fortune. Pauls Hardware has done a great guide recently. I built my system (first one for around 15 years) with my son and he loved it.

Thanks for all your help everyone. This all started with him wanting to just update his GPU. He wanted a 1660 but there priced so close to the 2060 it made it a hard decision. I'll post his current specs as we didn't think it would would be worth using anything off his old one. And a new build would be better in the long run and we could give this to his little brother.

As for us building it. We might. It's just a bit daunting with everything so expensive .I do have a mate who might give us a hand so that would save a bit .

Or if there is anything worth using out of the old system I'm sure he wouldn't mind reusing it to save some cash..

Case: Corsair Obsidian 350D highlighted with Green LED’s and Fans
Power Supply: Corsair GS 600w PSU
CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K 3.40GHz @ 4.50GHz Ivybridge CPU
Motherboard: Gigabyte G1.Sniper M5 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Motherboard
Cooler: Corsair Hydro H80i All in One Cooler
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit
Hard Drive: 1tb HD + 500g SSD
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 770 2048MB Graphics Card

Optical Drive: OcUK 24x DVD+/-RW SATA Drive

Thanks again everyone.

Honestly mate watch a few videos on youtube and get some help off your mate and us on here.
You can still use his HD, SSD and case. For the price its worth changing the PSU and the AIO might be worse replacing if its a few years old. The list I put together has a 2060 and an i7 8700k, remove the SSD and add a 240mm AIO and your away.

I'd keep that running and give it to the little one.

It is expensive yes, can you knacker it on build? Yes. But highly unlikely. See jayztwocents video how hard stuff is to break. Really the CPU is the most delicate..perhaps do that with out the kid in the room depending on his general energy levels :)

Few guides and you'll be away. I even think if you plan to do it a certain time, people will be here on hand if you have a problem for a Skype or forum chat.
