1st time mmo

Give Eve Online a go, it's been going since 2003 but has been getting a steady stream of new content and upgrades over the years. it can be a little unfriendly at the beginning but it does grow on you over time and skills train while your at work etc. You can play 10 hours a day or just odd hour here and there unlike WOW which will suck you in and destroy you :p

As an introductory MMO - WoW, period.

Currently with Cataclysm has the best 0-max level progression, is mature enough that you wont be dealing with bugs, are not going to be facing a ridiculously steep learning curve and is varied in so much as you can instance, solo play, do professions, PvP (from 10 to max level) etc etc.

It won't leave you wanting or dump you in at the deep end. Rift, for example, would be a ridiculous idea to pick up as an MMO newcomer, the sheer amount of trees and skills and class combos is going to be nothing but an annoyance.

The main problem with this sort of question is that many people will simply answer with whatever mmo they are playing rather than which one is actually right for you.

My advice, don't buy any of them yet, regardless of what people say. All the major mmos have trials, instead of buying one and jumping in, download the various trials for a variety of different kinds of mmo and try them and see which one is best for you. Only you can know at the end of the day.

Try to download the trials for a selection of mmos of differing types, so something like, eq2, LoTRO, wow, eve, one of the superhero ones, war etc. Try them out see what fits.

Don't play EvE as your first MMO, especially if you new to PC gaming, would be like learning to drive in a combine harvester, you'll end up lost, confused and angry. It's a great game and well worth checking out but it takes a hell of allot of time, you may have seen people joke about it's learning curve but it's about as harsh as they get.

I would suggest WoW, it's very friendly to new players and they have just implements some stuff that makes it even easier to get started, grab a free trial and give it a go. Ignore what people say about the player base, ever MMO has bad apples, wow just has proportionately more because it's player base is so much bigger, if you enjoy the trial and subscribe get yourself into a guild, there are loads of them that are just made up of people leveling and simply wanting people to talk to whilst they play, makes the levelling process much more fun.

To be honest it's probably worth just trying every trial you can, pick which one you have the most fun playing.

Only if you're a min-max'er. Half the fun of your first true mmorpg is finding your way & enjoying that period of blissful ignorance whilst you work everything out.

OP, if you want an easy intro, do WOW for sure, and try the trial out first before committing - but also consider starting a new mmorpg as people have suggested, try the Rift beta if you can get a key this weekend, Champions Online has gone free to play I believe and was quite fun, if you don't fancy pvp try LOTRO & if you do there's Mortal Online. If you want space rather than fantasy, there's Star Trek and Eve.

Basically there's loads out there, try a few of them first before committing :)

Just play whatever MMORPG takes your fancy.
They are all so easy these days that you'll have your character maxed in a few weeks.
Then once you've maxed your character the game really begins (so people keep on telling me).
Then after a few more weeks you'll be bored just doing the same thing over and over.

Seriously an MMORPG will not impact on your life more than any other new release.

They used to.....but that was a long time ago.

go for EVE , WoW has a terrible player base

Gawd, EVE would make you put down games forever if you chose it as your first MMO. I've no doubt it's a great game but it's not user friendly to newbies.

WoW is a good choice to start with and you have a lot of solo content to get through if you don't have mates who play, or even if you just want to be left alone to learn the game. WoW doesn't have a particularly "terrible player base". There are idiots everywhere in life, unfortunately and you learn to ignore them. OP, what server are you starting on?

One important thing to consider is how good the company behind the game deals with bugs/hacks/exploits/gold farming and other forms of abuses.

It doesn't matter how good the actual gameplay is if it is ruined by cheaters, haxxors and incompetent or non-existent GMs.

I used to play a game called Knight Online (which, at one time, was one of the biggest F2P MMORPGs out there). Great PvP, poor PvE but in the end completely ruined by cheats. Every time I think of going back to it, I remember the frustatrion of dealing with haxxors and I just stay away.

Hey guys

As some of you may know ive only been a pc gamer the past 7 months or so. Gonna try my 1st mmo and have decided on world of warcraft. Any tips for these sorts of games, also I dont know anybody else that plays so will this make it tricky? wanna get mmo practice in before the old republic! :D

Start a diet plan in advance as you WILL put on weight from all the junk food eating.
If your still a virgin then it will stay that way for a long time to come unless you get away from wow.
If you do have a girlfriend breakup with her now as im sure she wouldnt want to hear what your computer character is up to.
Write a farewell letter to friends and family as you will become a bit of a remtard after a while.
Get a very comfy chair.

This is also a very good point. Anarchy Online never reached its potential because of an awful first few days, their billing and authentication system was legendary at the time. It was however, a brilliant game, but never became as popular as it should have been because of bad press.

Whatever else may be said about Blizzard, they do fix things very quickly.

For two completely different MMO experiences, try both Dungeons & Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online.

Both are free to play, very polished, but very different in the way they work.

And anyone who recommends Eve as a first MMO should go straight on your ignore list. Brilliant game, but not for your first one, no way.

Why not EVE as a first MMO? atleast it would be a good one and not some bog standard elf fantasy MMO, yes it can have a steap learning curve but run the tutorial and look at joining a corp early on for a wealth of knowledge, anyone who is willing to play a MMO in the first place will be willing to put the time in to learn how a game works, if not then MMOs are a genre best avoided.

As for the first MMO comment playing 7 months or 7 years makes no difference if the OP has a good head on his shoulders and not a Homer Simpson style "Food goes in here" type of mentality then he'll be more than capable of picking up EVE.
