A pal of mine is selling his 01 plate 2.0 TDCi Mondeo Ghia X estate (115) and said I could have it for £1200. Its done 88K, had the DMF and clutch done in the last 5K, new starter motor and the bodywork is being touched up to remove minor dents and scratchs before its sold.

Currently I do around 10K per year, however I'm hoping to get another job soon which will increase my yearly miles to around 18-20K.

Am I considering a duffer or should I get it snapped up?

Some more info I forgot to post, his dad bought it from new, he's had it for the last 4 years or so. Essentially I know of the car from new and no major accidents or anything nasty to report.

with a recent dmf and clutch and starterand him touching up any little dings and dents i'd not only bite his hand off but rip his whole arm off along with it.

you've had one of the biggies in terms of potential bills for a modern diesel taken care of, you know of the car from new (i take it neither the seller or his dad are complete maniacs behind the wheel?) i'd be innclined to say a rather emphatic yes, as long as the rest of the car is reasonable.

I was considering a Focus as a Mondeo estate is quite large, I currently drive a 1.3L Fiesta. I had a little test drive from Chorley to Preston this afternoon and apart from the usual Petrol > Diesel clutch/accelerator differences (I learnt to drive in a diesel), it seemed to drive great. The insurance is a little cringeworthy over the Focus 1.6's I've been looking at as I only have 1 years no claims but not too OTT.

BOOOM!

Injectors, fuel pump, glow plugs etc etc.

The 01/Y Mk3s (and it was servicing guys at Ford who told me this) are the ones to avoid. Apparently a number of the basic components they sourced weren't quite as good as the later model ones and needed more regular or earlier replacing - brake pipes, bushes, suspension components, switches etc.

If you must buy make sure the service history shows that TLC and £££s has gone on the car, otherwise you'll be the one footing the bills because an 11 year old car under your ownership that hasn't had the work done and you might as well change your name to Muggins.

£1.2k sounds expensive for what is a fairly old and slow car, unless of course its had £££s spent on it.

I'm I'm 2 minds about this. On one hand it's relatively cheap, sounds like its been looked after and even if you do start to get injector or rear subframe issues then it could still give you some good service before costing you big money. Those are the 2 big things and both can be fairly gradual failures.

On the other hand, it's 11 years old, probably will need some attention at some point, and at nearly 20k miles a year I'd want something a bit newer and more dependable.

Sound advice, thanks. Just asked him now about the injectors, fuel pump and glow plugs and all been sorted apparently, I do know it has been properly serviced and looked after in general.

Sure he's not just "yes"ing to everything you say? Not unusual to need a few injectors by the time they get to that age, but all 4 plus a fuel pump would be extremely expensive and potentially have "written it off"...

Might be wrong, but sounds like you've asked him about what's been mentioned and he's just said "yep that's all fine". Glow plugs are rarely an issue by the way (20 quid for the set if they are) - id be paying much more attention to the rear subframe

3 years of trouble free service is potentially 60k miles... Don't think youve said what the mileage on it is, but I think that's probably optimistic

FYI injectors are about 100-120 quid new each or 60 used if you're feeling brave. Quick to fit but need somewhere with the computer to code the replacement to the ecu. Smoking, especially from a cold start and glowplugs light staying on are the symptoms. Early cars like this, especially estates suffered delamination of the rear subframe bushes so listen for clunks - circa 300-400 quid to put right IIRC. Oh and check the bottom of the doors for rust if you do decide you want it

Ask him to show you the receipts rather than taking his word for it.

Anyone who's clued up or properly looks after their car will keep the receipts not least because they know it adds value and makes the car easier to sell.

My Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 115 has well over 170k on the clock, it's lightly newer being a facelift 53 plate model, but it has been trouble free.

id deffo buy it, even if you had injector problems there cheap to fix now £85 per injector to sort out (put your postcode in delphi website brings up all agents near you) its just a valve inside them that wears out, and all 4 wont fail at once
