2.1 Speaker Package

Thanks again for the suggestions. Just before I click buy now I just want to make sure I have explored all choices and I noticed there are active monitors available to buy ie Audioengine. Anyone have any experience of these or suggestions on models?

Also can any owners of the Aego or Corsair SP2500 tell me if they hear a low hum when nothing is being played through the speakers? I have read one or two reports of the Aego doing this and apparently Acoustic Energy stating that this is normal for the Aego. The hum is the main reason for me looking to change my current speakers so is very important.
I think there are people reporting hum from speakers regardless of what they are (if they have the volume set at very loud level), but for my Aego M 2.1 and SP2500 I can't really say it is something I pick-up, and if there are any, they certainly not very noticable and doesn't bother me.

And regarding anything else you need to make sure, I think I should point out that if you are going to use any of these speakers, you definitely should get a decent soundcard or DAC...as using speakers like these with motherboard on-board sound is just criminal. Also for connecting to the speaker, you might want to get a 3rd party better quality cable instead of the bog-standard ones provide. For my SP2500, I get noticable subtle improvement by using proper interconnect phono/RCA cable, and a good quality 3.5mm cable would also be an improvement (what kind of cable(s) you'd be using depending on the soundcard/DAC you using).

Do you get that hum even with no input connected to the speakers?

I do. I isolated and moved the whole setup and still got the humming with nothing connected and with other sources connected. I've tried different power source and I have also tried a ground loop isolator and its still the same. Basically its the speaker setup, which is fine as I have had them years now.

Thats the issue I am sensitive to any sort of annoying noise, where as most people wouldn't pay any attention to it. Ive spent allot of time and cash silencing my rigs as I am pretty OCD about things like this, I honestly wish I wasnt. From what I have read this sort of hum happens at normal levels and Acoustic Energy have said that's normal for the Aego, if this is the case then its a no go for me as this is basically what I have with my current HK speakers.

I have a fair bit of decent av cables/interconnects lying about, if not I will buy what is needed. I have recently moved my gaming setup from the lounge to the spare room as I have bought an Acer Predator X34 display. My lounge av sound setup comprises of Monitor Audio A10 and A40 speakers (5.1) with a piano black SVS SB2000 sub and a Pioneer LX57 receiver, about 4ks worth of gear.

I have a spare Auzentech Forte sound card but have bought a Creative Z for xmas which will be replacing it. I wouldn't dream of using onboard audio with pc speakers.

So back to the Aego and Corsair, can you at normal listening levels with nothing being played hear any hum or hiss, even if it is slight?

If I do literally put my ears next to the satelites of the Aego M 2.1 and SP2500, there are some audiable level of hiss...but to be honest, I think that would goes for most active speakers systems.

I think the only advice I can give to you is may be to buy from the rainforest place, as if you really not happy with it, they will cover return postage/send courier to pick-up, as long as you give them a valid reason (you can just say you are not happy with the hiss/hum of the system) when filing a return.

I appreciate you taking the time to check this out, would you say one was louder than the other? Is it audible from say 40cm away?

I just checked on my two sets of 2.1 systems, and if I really realy really focus on "looking for it", I can just about barely make out the almost isn't there hiss for the Aego M 2.1; for my SP2500 the hiss seem to be slightly more apparent than the Aego M 2.1.

Thanks once again mate, you've been a great help and I really do appreciate all the info. :)

I notice you say its a hiss and not hum which I guess is more acceptable as the hum is a sign of the transformer which is what I find really annoying. I have to mute my speakers whilst browsing on the desktop. Can I ask how old your Aego speakers are?

I think you might be right in just buying one or the other and if I am not happy returning it. My heart says Aego based on what you have said about sound, the fact they are made by a proper speaker company and dare I say it looks of the satellites but the idea of not having accessible volume controls is a pain for me.

I got my Aego M 2.1 from MM 2nd hand, so I don't know how long the previous owner had it for. But I got it for so cheap, that I didn't care to ask so long as it is not faulty. I was lucky to see the thread early as there were very quickly came other members 2nd and 3rd in line :p

The benefit of SP2500 though is that it has a wired control unit/hub that you can place on your desk. It has knob for adjusting the volume and bass level, as well as muting the sub. There are also different settings like selectable program and EQ, but pretty much all of them sound crap, and I only change the EQ to POP and leave he program as NONE as that sound the best out of the bunch for the music that I listen to.

Yeah most of these DSP modes aren't worth using on receivers, not sure why manufacturers add them.

I am going to have a look at a few active monitors today and make up my mind by Monday as I really would like a solution for Xmas.

Had a listen of a few small 2.0 setups and walked away thinking they needed a sub. I think I am going to go for the corsair.

Yeah, some people seem happy with 2.0 and the ones I have even had reviews saying there was sufficient bass there to not need a sub even though there was a sub-out connection. Buying these speakers new will set you back £850 so they're not cheap but after a few days with them I decided that I definitely need a sub lol.

lol. :D

I know I wouldn't be happy with 2.0 from a small desktop sized speaker after listening to it.

They're not particularly small overall although the footprint is fairly small (145x145x305mm) but I definitely prefer them with a sub backing them up :)

Even the sub itself is fairly small but sounds pretty damn good (got the black one, not white one).
