2 different breeds of cats = OK? And other cat questions

Cruel leaving a cat indoors all it's life, I'd probably have a whole garage for the cat. Probably a good idea to take it for "walkies" on a lead, although you'll look weird at least the cat is getting exercise and stimulation.

Gurusan, do you allow your exotic cats out?

Nope. They might get run over or stolen or something! We live in a 2 story flat though so they run up and down the stairs and still manage to move around quite a bit....creating all sorts of havoc of course.

I will train him and the Bengal on a harness. In the short term, I can always take them for a walk in the garden.

I would never let him out of the house unsupervised though. If I did, I would give it 72hrs before he and the Bengal got nicked. Remember, these are pedigree cats, not street moggies.

A pic I took earlier today:

No it's not. My cats are both kept indoors and are perfectly happy - they love being warm and getting attention, and have enough space to climb. It's cruel to let a cat get run over by a car, or have to sleep in the cold.

badbob. WAS there any point in that comment? Think about it: you're entitled to your own opinion, but if you saw, the OP is wanting to make some form of outdoor area for his pedigree, rare cat. Get nicked or lost and well. You've got a brain, maybe, so think about it.

I really like the Maine **** breed sunama! I think they're awesome tbh. Never owned a cat before, but have friends who have had a house full of pedigree cats (not to dissimilar from yours) for as long as I can remember. One day I might own a cat, but just wouldn't want to commit until I have my own house and garden in a place which isn't central london.

Keep posting though, because it makes really good reading! Some more pics (maybe of smaller data size so internetz in spain can handle it :p) would be nice too.

lol perhaps if we live in the artic then it's cruel leaving it out- but British weather is hardly that harsh. A cat sleeping during the day outside is perfectly happy...and cats love to sit in the sun. Your cats are happy but they would be happier if they spent some time outside..sniffing other cats, chasing birds, etc. Although I understand that a pedigree cat would be nicked, however a "moggy" life is happier than one left indoors all it's life. Would you lock up your children indoors until they're 18, because a TV/PC provides enough? Our cat is likes being indoors but also hangs around the front/back garden.

How would you go about catproofing your garden? I can't imagine it'd be easy, the two we've got are amazing climbers, and can jump silly heights if they feel like it.

They're just normal rescue-home cats though, so someone stealing them isn't a worry for us, they just come and go as they please. Plus our road is fairly quiet, with lots of other cats around.

I'm not entirely convinced by this, our cats had to be kept in until they were neutered and they didn't seem any less happy. As long as "indoors" is a big enough space with enough variety (places to climb on, hide, etc.) I don't think keeping them indoors is cruel.

I think if you can put together a cat-run, then that is the ideal, as it allows the cat to enjoy the outdoors, while being protected from other animals, humans and dangers.

The garden cat proofing is done by having 6-7ft high fences. Then at the top of the fence, all the way around the fence, you put a netting that goes up and then curves inwards. This makes it incredibly difficult for a cat to get out. It does work, however, trees can be a big problem due to their ever growing branches.

Overall, a cat run is cheaper and more secure.

Bad bob is your cat a pedigree?

Some pedigree cats are highly susceptible to diseases. They simply dont have the genes (in-breeding) or the immune system to handle it. You send them outside, they kill a few rats, pick up a disease and die. It really is too risky. All the breeders of Maus and Bengals Ive been in contact with, all advocate keeping the cats in captivity. Not a single breeder has stated that they would be happy to allow their kittens/cats to roam the streets.

Gurusan has lovely cats. He keeps them house-bound, because he knows that those are not the sort of cats you allow out, to associate (and possibly fight) street-wise moggies. Pedigree cats cannot be treated in the same way as moggies.

Update time.

In a few days, I am due to pick up the Bengal. Here are few pics of him at 8 weeks old:

His eyes are gradually turning green, from blue (see earlier pics of him). He is also noticably larger than before.

I'm quite apprehensive with regards to how the Egyptian Mau will behave with the new arrival. The Egyptian Mau will be a month older than the Bengal, though what makes me apprehensive is the fact that the Mau behaves in an extremely "wild" manner, eg. he happily bites and scratches without much thought, though the biting has reduced, compared to a few weeks back. He is also very fast and very strong. This is what he is looking like these days:

And without the flash:

Dont be fooled by his innocent looking face. He is a terror and always tries to dominate me. Even when he was at his breeder, he used to chase the other cats of his litter. He definitely has a dominant personality, so it should be interesting to see how he behaves with the Bengal, who is also reputed to have a dominant personality.

More pics to follow this weekend, after I have picked up the Bengal.

our last Bengal was very prone to biting and scratching too, she got much better as she got older

pics look great ( the Bengal looks fantastic ), hope to have out kitties mid June

Thanks gents.

The Egyptian Mau is feeling very racey right now. He is jumping, running and even at times, attacking me. I think he feels a little neglected as I left him alone for 7hrs today.

I'm wondering how the Bengal will cope with him. We shall find out in a few days I guess.

Will see if I can get some pics of them going up and down the tree. Would easier to make a video though, I think. Lets just wait for the new arrival this weekend.

and a vid of one chasing the other up the curtains please :p

Dear Lord, I hope they dont chase up the curtains. So far, I havent seen Reflex run up the curtains and I hope it stays this way. The Bengal breeder did say though, that his Bengals do have a habit of doing this.

My pair looked exactly like the wiki pic of the two bengals - although I don't think they are, but they did climb curtains.... :D

Do you not discourage them from that sort of behaviour, ie. tell them off, or grab them and take them off the curtain?
