2 different breeds of cats = OK? And other cat questions

Do you not discourage them from that sort of behaviour, ie. tell them off, or grab them and take them off the curtain?

That didn't stop ours, what stopped her was leaving her there as they can find it difficult to get back down on their own

as for hoping they don't, I think you might be dissapointed on that one

Nahh, that's all part of the fun. That one in the pic is about 6feet off the ground. There's a few more feet above that and it was always good fun watching them try to get to the top and onto the pelmet.

The Bengal arrives in 2 days, so I promise to update this thread at that time.

Its a long journey as well - travelling from Bournemouth to London, door to door is about 3.5hrs, each way, so both the Bengal and I will be tired, after we return from the trip.

Well, the Bengal arrives tomorrow and out of all the days to do it, Reflex decided to fall off the cat tree and hurt his left rear leg. He is now walking with a limp, however, I dont feel it is a broken bone or anything serious. I believe he simply has a bruise. When I press his left rear leg, he doesnt flinch (something he would do if it was broken). I shall give it till Tuesday and if he is still limping, I will take him to the vet.

His accident might be a blessing in disguise as he wont be able to dominate the new arrival, immediately. This will give the Bengal a chance to settle in without being physically bullied by the older cat.

Anyway, I took a few pics of Reflex playing around on the cat tree yesterday (before his injury).

I got back from Bournemouth about 30 mins ago.

Ive introduced the 2 kittens. The Bengal is very placid and laid back. He could basically get on with any kitten. HOWEVER, Reflex is EXTREMELY aggressive. Lots of hissing and growling. Ive never seen him like this or heard him make these noises before.

In terms of althetisism, the Egyptian Mau beats the Bengal hands down. The Bengal, is the same size as Reflex, even though he is a month younger, yet the Bengal would get killed if I let Reflex do his thing.

I thought that Bengals were the most aggressive and active cat around. How wrong was I.

Pictures to follow.

Right.

Update time. The Egyptian Mau still has a limp, but his foot does appear to be recovering. He is still not at full power, however, he had more than enough power to overwhelm the new arrival.

To be honest, the Egyptian Mau breed is a little too athletic for the Bengal, which means that the Bengal stands no chanceand will be dominated by the Egyptian Mau.

They had a few scraps and the Egyptian Mau was easily coming out on top, at which point I was intervening. At some point, I will have to let them sort out their differences, without intervening, but hopefully, the Bengal will learn to run away from the Mau - something he isnt doing yet.

The problem is that the Bengal is a little too brave for his own good. He attempts to chase the Mau and this usually results in the Bengal being rolled onto his back.

Both cats are the same height and size, but the Mau is leaner, heavier, stronger, faster and has much much much faster reflexes. I played the laser game today and the running speed of the Egyptian Mau is at least 3 times faster than the Bengal.

If the Bengal doesnt learn to run away, he might get wounded.

Bengal is exactly 3 months old today and will almost certainly grow to around twice the size of the Egyptian Mau.

I wouldn't worry too much about them fighting, my two fight all the time and it often looks incredibly vicious with one grabbing the other by the throat and holding him down. Often the way they bundle around and bite each other I'm amazed there's never been any injury, but they've been like this for years and not once has there been anything more than wounded pride and pulled fur.

Gerat pics by the way, they look quite different to my two regular cats :)

I have some brand new shots taken of them 2 on the tree. Once again, Reflex is harrassing the Bengal.

...and after all the fighting and action, even Reflex cant stay awake. He slept with me yesterday, allowing the Bengal to sleep in the cat tree without being harrassed and we got about 4hrs sleep in total, so it doesnt surprise me that even Reflex needed a nap.

People must keep in mind that even though Reflex is clearly the stronger, faster and more intelligent, he still isnt 100% as he is walking around with a limp. I hope that by the time his foot has healed, he wont be so aggressive with the Bengal.

I've heard a lot that Bengal's can be quite vicious. My Bengal is certainly not that. He is very very gentle, though his claws are razor sharp at the moment, but I wont cut them yet as he needs them, to use against Reflex' attacks.

aww, cats are the best by miles. We get our cats from cats protection leagues for free, but your expected to give like a £20 donation. Their always really nice, we have a tabby long hair, tabby ginger and tabby short black haired...whos huge. Their all really nice.

The ginger one is agressive and gigner tom, ...well, just a lil small for a true ginger tom though :). Then the black long haired is the girl shes the only one which can stand up to the ginger, they dont fight, but someties if he tries to push in for food, she'll bop him on the nose. Then the big fat black one is soo lovely, real lap cat, but the gignger one totally bullies him, they aint too bad though, lol.

What I'm frustrated about is that I wanted to get a cat, as a playmate for the Bengal, who wouldnt get bullied by the Bengal. After research, I decided that I needed an athletic, strong cat, so I went for the Mau. Now it turns out that Bengal is the placid/gentle one, while the Mau is the wild animal who is bullying the Bengal.

Its only been about 12hrs so far, so hopefully, the Mau will begin to relax and go easy on the Bengal. Right now, the Bengal is getting crucified.

After eating 1hr ago, the Mau decided to go all out and attack the Bengal. Ive now put the Bengal in the lounge, with me and kicked the Mau out, with the door 3cm open.

Q1. Is it ok to keep 2 breeds like this or is it better to stick to the same breed/litter?
Don't you know it's illegal to keep 2 cats of different breeds?

Q2. Will they keep eachother company while I'm out of the house?
They will manage. One cat would manage.

Q3. In terms of sexes, which would be the best combination for me to buy the cats: 2 males, 2 females, 1 female & 1 male?
Thanks

2 Male = Good
2 Female = NOISEY twice a month
1 of each = exponential growth

Do they hiss and growl at one another?

When they're fighting each other they do. Usually its my older, smaller female cat that starts the fight and they continue to bundle, bite, scratch and bunny-kick each other until one gets the hump, hisses and runs off.

Most of the time they get along pretty well and often sleep next to each other and clean each other (well, sometimes the female starts to lick the others head but that nearly always turns into a throat bite - attack him whilst he's relaxed seems to be her motto).

It's quite a different scenario when either of them meet a strange cat outside though, as this results in arched-backs and really serious hissing which can be quite intense.

Although initially a bit upsetting, you'll soon get used to it as there's a huge difference between play fighting and defending territory against a strange cat, so don't worry.
By the look of your pics, they're having a great time.

My cats really don't fight seriously. Over time things wil get better, when the cat attacks your bengal, bop it on the head.

It soon associates attacking its 'playmate' as a slap on the paw to itself :P.

I shall keep this in mind. Right now, every time he beats up on the Bengal, I lock him in the cat carrier for 5 mins. The problem is that he is physically, in a different league to the Bengal.

The Bengals have a reputation for being bullies, but the Egyptian Maus are physically superior - they are the fastest domestic cat in the world, their senses are highly tuned, they are leaner, stronger, etc.

Some pics:

Earlier today, when they were relaxing, after all the fighting, biting and scratching:

And a few hours later, Reflex was attacking the Bengal, forcing him to hide in a box:

...it may look like the Bengal is fighting back, but dont be fooled. There is very little resistance from the Bengal.
