Hello

So i picked up a TV earlier in the year, from the MM actually, and its been ace. Fairly quickly though it developed an issue.

Its a Toshiba Regza 37XV635DB, and when turned on each day, greets me with the following image (sorry for the quality, im travelling atm and cant get a better one since it's back home)

This is obviously not good, but if i just leave it, over about 10-15 minutes to picture returns to normal, eventually giving me the crisp image it should.

What on earth? I cant really budget replacing it atm, and i dont mind turning it on a little while before im ready to watch something, but im concerned it will eventually explode. It doesnt seem to be getting any worse though.

Is it worth repairing?

Secondly, my brother in law has been looking at a Bose system for his TV. Im aware of its overpriced status so i told him id look for alternatives. What he likes about it though is the form factor. They dont have much space in their apartment, plus a 2 year old, and he's not keen on wireless speakers. What kind of options do we have? Budget isnt important but nothing astronomical, lets say mid range.

Cheers

If the issue is just there when you first power on then resolves itself id hazard a guess at capacitors failing, struggling to hold its full charge until they warm up eventually resolving the issue. Alternativly dry solder joints may be corrupting the connection between the power supply and the capacitors trickling supply to them again taking time to feed the capacitor the supply it needs to function.

Just a guess as these tend to be common fault points on aging T.v, i may be wrong though, a poke around in the back may have obvious signs of failing but then again may not.

...as mentioned in another thread, take a look at a Cambridge Audio Minx set: same form factor ,stereo or 5.1 etc at Richer Sounds.

My PC monitor actually has an almost identical issue, since it clears up after about 5 minutes I've not really bothered doing anything about it.

If you are happy with the warm up leave it for now, if it is a capacitor/s failing they will fail completely eventually so it will need a repair in the end but they can be very very simple repairs, on the other hand they can also be hard to locate too so its worth looking into it at least.

Is it worth it? for maybe the cost of a couple of pounds they can be, dry joints can be fixed with a diy re-flow so if you reach a point where the TV is considered a total loss its always worth a punt, after all they are always handy for a second room.

Forgot t ask, has the issue developed over time slowly taking longer & longer to warm up or has it one day simply taken 15 minutes to get going?

I mean if the repair is going to cost a couple of hundred I will leave it. I only paid 180 for it, I just can't afford to replace that ATM. If it was 50 quid I'd find the money.

It developed over two days really. I noticed some lines, replaced the hdmi cables and it cleared, although now I know replacing the cables did nothing, it just had time to warm up while I was changing them. Then one day it was just really bad. Since it went bad it's always taken 15 mins, not gotten any worse through heavy usage.

whip the back off and look for bulging capacitors, if you find any go grab some new ones, maplins stock those, i have fixed a few for friends, they are still working perfect to this day, if problem re-occurs have another look again, after time some of the other ones that you didnt replace may start to show signs of age, or, just replace them all at once

capacitors costs a few pounds maybe even 10's of pence :D worth checking out, removing the back as long as you careful where you put it for the screen shouldn't pose any issues to the tv so its worth checking out. a little bit of your time and a couple of quid MAY be all it needs, on the other hand if you can live with the warm up and cant afford to replace it dont mess with it yet.

If it goes completely you have nothing to loose.

Thanks guys, I have a maplin in town so I'll try taking a look. This will be a first for me! I assume I need to freshen up on how to solder, been 12 years since I last did it :p

Soldering is like riding a bike. Remember less is more and take a look in the back first, survey the insides and see what's wrong, post pictures if unsure
