Samsung are coming out with a 3 platter 1.5TB drive but so far I've only seen an "eco" version, probably won't offer the best latency.

I'm just after something as quiet as the F1 that I'll be mainly using for storage and backup, so that sounds ideal.

I've never seen the term "two platter" used before. Besides less moving parts, what is the advantage, and how many platters are normally in a drive (say my WD Caviar Black 1TB)?

(Theoretically) Faster due to higher data densities. Also less power, less heat, maybe less noise. Probably 3 platters in your 1 TB WD Black.

slackworth, can you find out if the following drive uses a 320gb platter or a short-stroked 500gb: 320GB Seagate ST3320418AS Barracuda 7200.12. Competitor has it in stock and its around £10 cheaper than the 500gb which is a nice saving if you dont need much space.

I believe these are a short-stroked 500GB. We have plenty in stock now.

That is true, but all of those will be solid state drives, hard drives will be way too slow at 1.8" to run Vista/W7 without slowdowns.
