Hi, what would be the best HDD's to use in raid configuration that are under £50 each, space isnt that important, Two drives of 160GB + will do fine.

So which HDD's for less than £50 each and with a minimum of 160GB each, will give the best performance when setup in raid?

Really small drives are poor value for money at the moment. Some of the ones that are less than 250GB even cost more (not just more per MB, actually more money!) than larger ones. So a couple of 250GB Samsung SpinPoint F1 drives would probably be the smallest and cheapest that would make sense, and they'd come in at less than £30 each. Still well within budget, though, at £40 each would be a pair of 500GB Samsung SpinPoint F3 drives. They are quick and generally considered good drives, so personally that's what I'd go for, though obviously if the extra space really is a waste for you then sticking with the 250GB drives would save you a few pounds.

The RE3 drive may give a slight performance edge in some situations but quite honestly I don't think you're going to see enough difference in practice to justify a 50% price premium over the Samsung F1. At the 500GB level the WD is a little bit faster than the Samsung, but according to the reviews this comes at the cost of higher power consumption, temperature, noise, and of course price.

price is only a couple of quid, noise / power consumption doesnt really bother me, and i guess added temp isnt great but i doubt it will be that bad, id prefer the best performance i can get from 2 drives under £100 total
