2 tb limit

is the 2tb limit for mbr just for bootable drives or could an external hdd have a partition larger than 2tb. i know gpt can be above it but i would like to attach it to my xp machine every now and then
 
You're definitely limited to 2Tb for bootable devices until EFI becomes standard, regardless of the OS.

I'm pretty sure that plain 32bit XP is also limited to 2Tb volumes, you need to go to Vista, XP64 or one of the server OSes to use a gpt partition.
