hi people

well ive invested in 2 SCSI 36g 15000rpm HP atlas drives new at a very good price.

I have 2 questions or maybe more!

1st adabtec DELL OEM C4272 Adaptec 39320 39320-R One Channel 64Bit PCI-X U320 SCSI this is a dual channel card but one is internal, what ever that means. first thing to ask is any good?

2nd what cable do i need to conect the drives to card? all new to scsi so have no idea!

3rd I would like to run raid O on these drives as i have enough storage of 500g how would they perform in raid O?

4th might have a couple of raptors going cheap soon!

5th all help greatly apreciated!

Cheers! :)

Yes that SCSI card is great as I have on in my server/downloader. However I would not use them in RAID if you are using them in a 32-Bit PCI slot as you will actually lose performance as the BUS cannot even cope with the bandwidth of one of drives and you will reduce the superb Random Access time due to the RAID 0 setup!! (Something which is effected very little if at all when running on a 32-bit PCI bus)

Best to place either drive on their own channel, one connection will be inside the PC on the PCB on the SCSI card, the other will need to be routed outside via an empty PCI bracket and connected to the U320 68pin connector outside the case. (This is how mine is setup and works perfect, I can extract a 4.36Gb DVD from one 15k SCSI --> the other 15k SCSI in about 65 seconds  )

You need to use U320 compliant 68pin SCSI cable for best performance although their maybe little difference if you were to use U160 cable due to the fact of the 32-Bit PCI bus limit!! However for the sake of a few quid I would still opt for the U320 cable. These are pretty distinctive as the cables are twisted and very stiff solid (see pic below)

If your Hd's are 68Pin then you should be able to terminate them with jumpers on the hard drive itself, but using a cable with an active terminator (like in the pic above) will guarantee it works even if you can or cannot terminate with the drives themselves.

Hi jeff thanks for the reply! I will be useing PCI-X as my board has 2 slots.

so will this be ok for a full speed raid system?

and i will order me up some cables when my drives arrive tomorow.

cheers!

jeff if you dont mind a quick look at this and tell me what you think/

Adaptec 39320-AR ultra 320 raid PCi-X card 2 channel
twin atlas 36g 15000rpm 320 drives

What i would like to do is run raid O with this if possible but iam open to surgestions for the best way to set them up!

many thanks

matt

''Adaptec 39320-AR ultra 320 raid PCi-X card 2 channel''

Thats the exact SCSI card I have (Got on fleabay for £75 new :D )

If your PCI-X is 133Mhz then those 15k Atlas's will go like a rocket in RAID 0 :D

The reason I went for single drives on each channel is because I use my 15k SCSI's for downloading and extracting large (4.36Gb) 'Linux' rar sets.

What are you going tio be using the PC for that is having the SCSI setup?

Thanks jeff sounds like i got everything i need, well there for my main PC, i do video editing as i put together VW cup raceing team video, plus i download a lot myself, and play games!

so basicly as much as possible! I have some large storage drives that i use mainly for back up where speed isnt really the issue, but i do like speed when saveing rar files and video

hopefully the scsi will speed things up nicely! thanks for all your advice geoff, much apreciated and i may well call on your knowlage again when i get everything all set up ready to configure. looking forward to some scsi speed, drives have arrived its just the card now, plus i have some cables.

and also if you know anyone intrested i have a american megatrends series 475 rev-B3 mega raid card with its own intel processor and onboard ram, bit of a beast really but its ultra 160 PCI based. so if you know anyone, please let me know.

many thanks

matt
