Alright Chaps,

Need to pickup a nice 20" TFT (1680x1050) for approx £170, main use would be gaming and surfing and it's a secondary unit. . .

Main contenders that I see are:

Samsung SM206BW 20"

DELL UltraSharp 2009WF

Any advice mucho appreciated! :)

Would the extra 2" over the 20" cause that much of a slow down in games may I ask?

As I'm looking for a widescreen, but 22" just seems a tad too big, this 19" standard one I use is fine atm...but a 20" widescreen would just put the iceing on top really...

None at all, it's the same resolution, same number of pixels :)

How's that work then?

I know the res is the same....But as it's a larger screen, does it not have to fill more space? Theoretically using more resources etc.

However . . . the pixels will be bigger on the 22" surely?

That's the reason I never favoured 22", same resolution as a 20" but just spread across a 22" screen?

The only advantage I can see of going with a 22" is for a slightly bigger screen for movie viewing?

My main monitor is a three year old DELL 24" at 1920x1200, very happy with that but I have a second system on my desk to my right and need a smaller screen. I did have there a 17" 1024x768 LCD but I flogged that and lumped a rubbish old CRT in its place as a stop gap. . . . . fast forward two months and the beige beast is still on my desk and looks **** :D

Was hoping to find a nice 20" to take care of secondary duties and also give my mates a nice screen to look at when they sit and game with me!

I would not even entertain a 20" Widescreen.

I jump customers from 19" Widescreens to 22" Widescreens, some go 24" Widescreens if they can/want to pay more.

None are "Too Big" after a few days/1 week of use, it becomes normal.

Yes but you're stuck with carp TN panels and larger dot pitch with 22" TFTs, with the exception being the new Levono 1900x1200 22" that nobody has in stock. Of you want a cheap high quality monitor a 20" Dell 2007WFP or 2007FP is the best way to get away from TN panels, OcUK have just sold out (literally half an hour before I was going to buy one :D) but you don't have to look hard to find them going for £202 inc VAT, which makes them just the cost of shipping more than the same thing with a TN panel from Dell. I'd argue that there is a market for smaller high quality screens for those without enough desk space or a need for a larger monitor, I could easily have bought a 24" for the same money but it would only No Swearing! me off, I don't really consider myself a video/photo snob but I still can't stand any TN panel I've seen, the fact you can't get them to display a single colour let alone accurately reproduce the correct colours makes them a complete non-starter for me and I'm only replacing my CRT because it's packing up and driving half way round the country to pick up another great big thing that hardly fits on my desk isn't terribly appealing right now.

@ Laiders, Dont know what your talking about, most of the panels here are TN, so wont matter if 20" or 22", you buy to a lesser budget thats what you get.

The Sammy I mentioned is avail in the "S Type Panel" (far better).

If someone here was looking at £170-200 for a 20"-22", I would advise them to save a bit more and buy the 24" OCUK and make sure you but the VA version (they will replace if you get a TN).

Would you buy 2nd hand? keep an eye out as I may be selling my Dell 2007WFP soon !

I just recently bought the iiyama ProLite E2003WS-B1 20" Widescreen and i'm very happy with it, only about £155 delivered. No dead pixels at all (which has so far been my experience with the last 5 iiyama monitors i've had) 2ms response time, which is great for gaming. Dont be scared off by the fact it's a TN panel, there's a lot of scaremongering and superiority complexes floating about, have a read here; http://www.pureoverclock.com/article641.html

I'm steering clear of those things, I just read about problems in that other thread...Too much of a hit and miss product to be perfectly honest.

I only opt for a 20" over 22" as I don't believe I need 22"...I have a 19" CRT (Which is fine quite frankly...) And some cheap 19" LCD screen, which I only started using as the colours looked better on that than on my CRT in Crysis.

If I had the choice, I'd get a 20" non-widescreen with a res of 1280x1024 or something, as that's more than ample for me.

Thanks for suggestions all, some good pointers there! :)

As luck would have it I stumbled across someone selling a used 20" for a very attractive price so I snapped it up. I'm sure you guys will kill me because it may not have the latest uber-chic panel but really it seems to be a very nice monitor to me? :D

The E207 does not come with that stand btw! I have one here and the stand in the pic is the 2007WFP/2007FP stand :)

Heh I didn't notice that until you mentioned it! Looking again I noticed it wasn't even the right monitor lol! :o

Here are some accurate pics of the E207WFP's stand!

Only had it 3 hours but I am very pleased. I can see that viewing angles thing compared to my old 24" DELL but to be honest its not as bad as some people make out. For a single person sitting watching a film or playing a game it really is superb, very bright and good contrast I must say!

As a secondary monitor on a second machine to my right it fits the bill perfectly.
