2004 4.4 V8 Range Rover

What are the costs like for maintenance and parts versus a Range Rover? awhile back my dad looked at the X5 but was put off by those costs as you seemed to pay quite a lot just for the fact of the name and model involved.

Not even with someone else's barge pole. You might buy it for £5k, but when you factor in the maintenance costs I'm sure you could get something far better.

13 old design. The L322 came out in 2002.
Was about to lambaste your maths until I realised the necro on the thread :)

Actually I’d - almost - say the reverse.

If you want a status symbol that isn’t much use as an off roader then the X5 is the one to have.

For what they are they actually handle very well given the sheer size and weight, the quality- inside especially- is leagues ahead of the X5 the ride is far better it’s a much better product with a considerable price hike over an X5 to reflect it.

I don’t fancy one as a daily driver - don’t like big 4x4’s anyway tbh - but, they are epic machines in their own right, so very very much more than an X5.

I'd expect as much from someone who drives trucks 24/7.

The x5 is a refined drive.

The range rover is like driving a tractor on the road. It's not a drivers car.

As for pricing you can pick up a brand new evoque for just £30k or lease one for around £360 a month.

Yeah the vogue and sport cost more but its no longer a brand just for the middle and upper classes.

I've driven the supercharged range rover sport, petrol and it was a terrifying beast the way it shifted all that weight. The x5 diesel I drove even with it being a diesel felt leagues ahead in refinement in terms of driving it.

I'd rather be a passenger in a range but I'd rather drive an x5

If its the same n62b44 in the BMW 545/645/745i then it'll leak oil from every orifice, every gasket will need replacing etc.

An X5 is hardly a drivers car is it

I mean, my shortlist does consist of a diesel X5, a 4.4 petrol Range Rover and a Lotus Elise!

Seriously though I'm not after a "drivers" car. If I were, I wouldn't be looking in this segment. I want something that I can waft about in, something my parents can easily get in and out of, something with decent ride height and comfort. I just happen to love the look of the L322.

As i mentioned a couple of years ago in this thread, loved my RR (4.4 V8) and would certainly not rule out getting another one. The only thing which would stop me now is the very old design of them now, these came out 16.5 years ago and even the 2010- models show this in places.

Fantastic vehicles but perhaps a little old now unless you specifically wish for the very impressive off road and towing credentials?

For the money and if this is for on road use then i think i'd reluctantly lean towards a 2009- X5, although they are nothing like as impressive as vehicles.

I don't think any large 4x4 is. however one feels like your driving a tractor the other a large car.
The RR is a supremely smooth air suspension luxury car with incredible sound insulation, a fantastic ride, and some of the best seats and best seating position in the business. They are nothing like a tractor, they are more like a huge luxury saloon in terms of the way they waft down the road.

I have no idea why you consider a RR to be anything like a tractor - unless the only RR which you have ever driven is a classic model from 1975?

Expect what you like from me, I think Jez just underlines my point.

yeah i'm talking about handling rather than suspension, etc.

i keep saying tractor because that is usually what drives around in fields. obviously the suspension and ride is much better than a tractors.

it handles like one though in comparison to an X5.

if you are using off road then range rover all the way nothing else comes close. on road use only then IMO the X5 is the much better car.

Thing is though the Range Rover is so much more than an extremely capable off roader whereas the X5 is an SUV type vehicle that handles well for the class, little else.

Yes it won’t handle like an X5 but equally to compare it to a tractor is laughable, for what it is it handles remarkably well whilst cosseting you in a way an X5 can’t hold a candle to.

If your indeed just after decent road performance then I’d far rather a 5 series touring over an X5, an X5 is effectively a 5 Series on stilts anyway but with greater weight and higher centre of mavity, if road performance/ handling is a deal breaker the 5 Series is a much better car than the X5 in every respect.

The Range Rover is in a different league again but without the sharp handling, what you lose there you gain everywhere else though but at a price.

What is with saying range rovers usually drive around in fields? Most of them come with low profile UHP road tyres and 22" alloys :p They are a high end SUV for school runs and milling around in as a daily use car, not farm vehicles.

Talking about handling on cars of this age is pointless anyway. A 2006 Range Rover which has had its suspension rebuilt will handle far better than an X5 of the same age which has only had the bare minimum spent to get it through the MOT. If both cars were maintained equally, then the X5 would probably be slightly better, but it’s still hardly a sports car. And very few cars over 8-10 years old will have their suspension meticulously checked and refreshed regularly.
