What time does the race normally start for this one? I seem to remember about 5 - 6AM in the morning last year...

Malaysian Grand Prix on ITV1 and ITV2

Qualifying 1 - Sat 19 March 1320-1505 (ITV1)

Live race - Sun 20 March 0640-0900 (ITV1)
Race rpt - Sun 20 March 1500-1730 (ITV1)

Highlights - Mon 21 March 0015-0115 (ITV1)
Highlights - Mon 21 March 0030-0120 (ITV2)

Pretty sure the race starts at 7am. Nice that the Qualifying is being shown 7 hours after it happens... Bloody ITV.

And they're not even showing half of it  - just highlights of the second session, I imagine.

Eh? 1h 45mins of qualifying? That'll be the whole of Q1 - we'll only get highlights of Q2 with the race sunday morning.

does ferraris new car appear this race?

Doubtfull.

Michael Schumacher could use it this race - unlikely though. More likely at the 4th race it'll appear in his mitts.

Rubens could get the new car as early as next race. As he needs to use his engine for 2 races..he finished in Aus so he has to use the engine this weekend and the engines are not swapable.

First bit of interesting news from this GP.

FIA close engine loophole

As of this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix, the Formula One teams will have to justify the reasons for a car’s retirement if they wish to use a fresh engine for the following race.

The clarification of the ‘one engine-two weekend’ rule has been made by the FIA after BAR retired both cars on the final lap in Melbourne to take advantage of a regulation loophole allowing any driver not finishing a race to use a new V10 at the next event, even if their previous engine was still race worthy.

“A distinction will now be made between failing to finish and choosing not to finish, the former is normally accidental or beyond the control of the driver while the latter is not,” said the FIA in a statement.

“In order to ensure the purpose of the regulation is fully respected, and unless the reason is completely clear, in future we will require the team of any driver who fails to finish the first of two races to explain the circumstances surrounding the retirement to the Stewards of the meeting.”

Should the stewards decide a retirement was unwarranted, the driver may have to start the following event with the same engine, or accept the normal ten-spot grid penalty if a new one is fitted.

Good good. However this is open to interpretation still....sadly..

aye and I doubt it'd be hard for a driver to purposefully detonate his engine assuming the required software protection is removed.

They can adjust the rev limiter from inside the car - wind it up to 20k and ka-boom!

Think the engines this year are able to withstand around 19250-19500rpm for short amounts of time. Pretty sure the Mercades can do 19000rpm reasonably reliabily - but I wouldn't be surprised if they limit them to 18750rpm to increase lifespan.

Apparently most of the engines are the same power as they were last year if not higher now. Thats impressive.

Bumping this thread to remind me to update it in the morning.

Oooh...Also Michael Schumacher has kept last races engine so he will probably be using the 2005 car in Bahrain on 1-3/4/2005.

This whole engine rule thing is stupid, and as you have pointed out.... still open to interpretation.

Bahrain is race 3 isn't Flibster????

Yup...thats the next one.

As the life of engines goes up - so does the cost as the testing of them is longer and more difficult to do..also...with the change to 2.4l V8's next year * I think* thats an entirely new engine so the cost will go up again. You can't just chop 2 cylinders of the V10's

FIA = Clueless.

Now converting the txt file I've been sent to meaningfull sensible results from friday free practice.

Are you going to post Q1 times before that session is shown at lunchtime tomorrow?

Yup - But I will do them as hidden text again.

What surprises me - in the Morning session Renault didn't leave the pits. Are they that confident or just trying to preserve the engines..I wonder...

That raises an interesting question - what would happen if they wanted to bring in the new car at an even numbered race? Does the current engine fit in the F2005? Would they have to take a penalty to run the new chassis with the correct engine?

Here's hoping.....

The current engine does not fit the new chassis - that has already been pretty much confirmed by them - they either need to take the 10 place drop or introduce the car after the engine's 2 races

Do Ferrari want to cut costs in F1 - it seems now.

TESTING ROW RUMBLES ON
Last Updated: Friday, 18, March, 2005, 16:10

Ferrari's rivals have once again called on the world champion team to rein back its testing commitments.

Nine of Formula 1's teams have committed to an agreement which limits them to 30 days testing during the season.

But Ferrari refuses to fall in line.

The teams fear that the ongoing dispute could lead to a potential cost war that would drag the sport through another period of spiralling costs.

"Ferrari's actions not only potentially destabilise Formula 1 and increase costs but also provide Ferrari with an unequal advantage over all other teams," a statement attributed to the teams read.

"Inevitably, such actions on the part of Ferrari can only increase costs within Formula 1 and undermine the principle of a 'level playing field' in the sport.

"The nine teams are requesting that Ferrari now reconsiders its position and acts in a responsible manner to support this valuable cost-saving initiative."

Ferrari team principal Jean Todt responded by saying that it is the sport's governing body the FIA, and not the teams, that should set limits on testing.

"We believe it is not the job of the teams to decide on the rules, even if they can make suggestions, leaving the sporting authority to establish the rules of the game," he said.

"We are open to discuss any proposals that can lead to an effective reduction in costs, above all for those teams that do not reap any benefit from the current situation."

Ferrari is conducting a private test at Mugello this weekend to develop its new F2005.

"Ferrari is the only team moving Bridgestone's tyre development forward, which is also of benefit to the other two teams (Jordan and Minardi) who have an agreement with the Japanese supplier," added Todt.

The Frenchman also revealed that he did not believe Ferrari's current testing programme, which he says is being run at a cost of two million Euros less than 2004, gave it an advantage over its rivals.

"If we analyse the testing that has taken place in the first months of 2005," he explained, "it can be seen that Bridgestone runners did a quarter of the total mileage achieved by those teams who are with the other tyre supplier.

"This situation can hardly be seen as advantageous to us."

"When the previous testing agreement was coming to an end, we tried to find a new compromise, which took the reality of the current situation into account.

"Unfortunately this did not prove possible and therefore we felt that no testing guidelines were in place anymore and we intend to continue on that premise."

ooooh...hello.

Sato is not taking part in todays 1st practice session and has been replaced with Anthony Davidson...

No reason has been given as of yet.

Simon/~Flibster

Now confirmed. Sato has a fever and will not be taking any further part in this wekeends grand prix.

Now we get to see how good Davidson really is.

Nasty..
Track temp is between 30 and 32°C
Air temp is 29°C
It's dry..thankfully
Windspeed and direction is fluctuating like mad...one min it's along the pit straight, then it's at 90° to it...Would hate to drive in that.
Windspeed is going between 1 and 5m/s
