Sir Steve Takes Celebrity Pole

Five-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave will start on pole position for the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix Pro-Celebrity race after his team mate former Formula Ford Champion Garth Tander put in a dream lap during official qualifying. Australian Tander is no stranger to the mighty 380 bhp Chevrolet V8 SS Lumina’s power as he competes in the V8 Supercar Championship in his home country.

Following a day of safety briefings and track orientation his celebrity partner completed his first outing in the car with resounding success. Despite a nervous start, Britain’s greatest Olympian soon got to grips with the car and quickly proved that he could cut the mustard against his celebrity counterparts. He was in good company out on the track with the likes of Jamiroquai front man Jay Kay, fellow Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson and US soul superstar John Legend.

Commenting on his track debut Sir Steve said: “It was amazing! That was my first time driving solo in a race car and I had no idea what to expect. The car was easier to handle than I thought it would be but I managed to spin the car once so it’s also easy to get it wrong as it’s so powerful. The car drives so smoothly but if you hit on the power too hard at the wrong time then the car can really run away with you – I think I scared some of the marshals a couple of times!

“The whole experience was magical, it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do and it far exceeded my expectations. I can’t wait for the race tomorrow and Sunday, I’m just sad that I only have ten laps left.”

Pink Floyd drummer and avid car fanatic Nick Mason and his partner ITV Formula One commentator Martin Brundle are second on the grid following a superb performance from the former Formula One driver. Mason and Jay Kay are joint favourites for the two ten-lap races over the weekend.

Jay Kay revealed his strategy earlier in the week saying: “I’m planning on sticking to Mason’s tail and then just overtaking him on the final straight. I think he’s a great driver but I’m going to give him a real run for his money! I’m thrilled to be in Bahrain for the first race of the Formula One season, it’s going to be amazing….I’m even more thrilled to be asked to race – any excuse to get out on the track and I’ll jump at it!”

Ali Hasan and Todd Kelly are third in the line up with Status Quo legend Rick Parfitt and former Le Mans driver Tiff Needell in fourth place. Alongside the international celebrities are some of the region’s favourites including Lebanese superstar Ragheb Alama, a man firmly established as one of the Middle East’s top singers and personalities, take to the track in front of a legion of fans at the Grand Prix.

Alama will have competition from local sporting hero Rashid Ramzi. Bahraini born Ramzi became the first man to complete the 800m/1,500m double at the world athletics championships in Helsinki last year when he stormed down the finishing straight to hold off the late rush from the Olympic champion, Yuri Borzakovski, in a flying finish in the 800m final.

It won’t just be testosterone that will rule on the race track, the fairer sex will be well represented with a strong line up including British motoring journalist Emma Parker Bowles and Persian-born Laleh Seddigh, motorsport’s answer to Angelina Jolie. Seddigh makes a welcome addition to the line-up of pro drivers supporting the celebrities. The 15 cars, stars and pro-drivers will line up for the first of the two races tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 4.45pm.

The ten lap race will be the first of its kind in Bahrain and compliments the curtain-raiser to the 2006 FIA Formula One World Championship. The professional drivers will start and complete the first five laps of the track before a pit stop swap with their celebrity partners for the remainder of the race.

This sounds a great laugh. :D

Flibster, I've had a punt on RB @ 12/1 ... wouldn't that be great? :D

It'll turn to disaster though, hehe.

I used to make a nice bit of pocket money (all off DC!) but have been making horribly bad calls recently. Remember Monaco - think it was '99 - where DC won after MS suspension failed. I scooped up £3500 profit that Sunday :D Those days seem long gone now - expect RB to not have the dream first win for Honda, but to skid out on lap#1 hehee

£3500 - nice. :D

Good job I've bet elsewhere then. :D I've gone with Raikkonen.

Would be good to see Honda get a win though. There's so many teams with a possibility of winning this year though. Could be a good season.

Honda, Renault, McLaren, Ferrari...possibly Williams as well.

Bahrain GP: Free practice 3

Jenson Button was the quickest man in Bahrain this morning, the Honda driver recording the best overall time of the one and only practice session here today. Michael Schumacher was second ahead of Fernando Alonso and Renault teammate, Giancarlo Fisichella. Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari and Jacques Villeneuve in the BMW Sauber rounded out the top six.

Yuji Ide was the first driver to set a timed lap here this morning, the Super Aguri driver in the low 1:40s after six laps of the Bahrain circuit. This was the final practice session of the weekend, the new format changed to just one solid hour instead of two forty five minute sessions. Track temperature was at 29 degrees however it was very dirty after strong winds in the area littered the track with sand, hence Ide’s extra slow time.

Several drivers begin to emerge, including BMW’s Jacques Villeneuve and Honda’s Jenson Button, with the hope that they can clear most of the sand away as they lap. They will need to get in as much work as possible as the next time they emerge after this session is for qualifying.

The track finally comes to life and times begin to tumble. Twenty five minutes in and Kimi Raikkonen seems no worse for wear as he puts his troubled MP4-21 at the top of the leaderboard. The Finn runs wide on his next lap and kicks more dirt up onto the track. Button comes through to take top spot, over half a second faster than the McLaren. Rumour has it that McLaren will need to de-tune their Mercedes engines by up to 35 bhp to ensure they don’t blow.

David Coulthard moves into second for Red Bull, the Scot putting in the fastest first sector. Alonso takes third but is soon knocked back to fourth by his teammate Giancarlo Fisichella, who slots into top spot. Next lap around and Alonso is second best, four tenths behind his teammate, but it is only temporary as Kimi Raikkonen takes the position for himself.

Michael Schumacher is up to fourth in the Ferrari while Mark Webber goes seventh for Williams. Alonso crosses the line for top spot only seconds before Jarno Trulli puts his Toyota just a tenth of a second behind the Renault. Times at the top continue to change as the track conditions improve, Raikkonen and then Michael Schumacher taking their turns at the top of the times. Felipe Massa emerges, the Brazilian recording the best first sector time, but his second sector is a little off, leaving him tenth after the fastest third sector as well.

Massa tries gain and this time he gets the second sector just right and records the best time of 1:32.826, almost a half a second faster than his Ferrari teammate. With ten minutes remaining, drivers returned to their respective garages before the final push.

Juan Pablo Montoya is not a happy man as he returns to the pits, shaking his head at the time he recorded, three seconds off the pace. The Colombian driver has been complaining that his car is not as powerful as Kimi Raikkonen’s and even asked for an engine change, but his request was denied.

With five minutes remaining, the track comes to life once again with almost everyone venturing back onto the circuit. Alonso moves instantly into the lead with the fastest sector times in two and three. Montoya jumps up to P11, but he is still two and half seconds off the pace. Button moves into second, but is soon pushed back to third when Michael Schumacher puts his Ferrari on top, a tenth up on Alonso. Button finishes his lap and takes top spot from Schumacher by a mere .011!

Interesting times there, not sure if anyone is sandbagging and only looking at race fuel qualifying setups - McLaren possibly on the back of Ron's comments yesterday.

The Honda we know is quick, as is the Renault but the Ferrari is looking dissapointingly rapid ;) Big surprise has to be JV, well up there in the so far anonymous Sauber, equally surprising that Nick the blue eyed boy Heidfeld is so far behind. Little dissapointed in the Williams performance given how well Wurz went on Friday.

I would say we're in for a good scrap in session 2 today, there are probably 7 or 8 cars fighting over maybe 5 spots at the bottom of the top ten.

YEAH BABY!!!!!

New keyboard linked up and comfy. :D

I have no idea how this qualifying session is going to go - I have no idea how to do the commentery.. :D

Looking forward to this now. :D

Apparently McLaren have detuned during practice by around 35-45 bhp to ensure the engine survives the first race with no damage.

As you can probably tell - I'm enjoying myself here. :D ;)

No where near as good as an Australian start but as it's during the day I can crank up the surround sound. :D

Already had the other half come through and complain that I've woken her up with the noise. :D

Whos everyone supporting then? Obviously Button but any other teams you like?

I support both Red Bull and Honda :D Barrichello is class and will keep Button honest this season.

As Lotus are no more *:(* I've been a McLaren boy for years. :D

However - also supported Minardi as well as the hardest working team in F1 - will have to decide who else I'm following this year.

Suspect it could end up as Toro Rosso or Super Aguri...
