2008

2008 will be just like every other year - hardware simply won't be fast enough to play all games maxed out in high resolution.

Incidentally, Crysis isn't the only game to kill current gen cards this year. DX10 versions of CoJ, WiC and LP destroy the 8800 series when maxed out.

8800GTX (2006) - too slow to run Oblivion maxed out in high res: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/nvidia_geforce_8800_preview/images/aafol1600.gif
6800U (2004) - too slow to run Far Cry maxed out in high res: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_6800_performance_and_overclocking/images/fc1600.gif
9700pro (2002) - OK, so maybe this puppy could just about handle titles of the time - a truly revolutionary card.

Please note the above benchmarks are only running 4xAA 8xAF i.e. not maxed out.

Ok, I see your point. But 40fps isn't unplayable.

Yeah, but you gotta remember that's 38-40fps average, i.e. the minimum fps will be much lower. Crank it up to 16xAF with 8xAA and you're really gonna be in trouble.

Of course, games like these look fantastic even when not maxed out, so I don't have a problem. But this guy is talking about Crysis in 1920x1080 max settings, that needs an obscene amount of power, even 3x 8800ultra in Tri-SLI isn't anywhere near fast enough

What about medium, I gave up on maxed gfx but I'd like to play games @ med-high settings with low lvls of aa & AF ( 2-4x ), would an 8800GT ( hoping to buy soon ) handle games ok-ish, I don't want to buy a new card and then discover that in a year games will look carp on it, I mean atm my 6800GS has provided me with quite pretty gfx but on the newest titles I have to play @ 1024x768 or not play it at al, but then again, the 6800 series have been around for 2 years now.
If I'll need to buy a new card again in a year then tbh I'll give up on upgrading my pc and get a console, tired of spending more and more, a few years ago when I bought a 6600GT just for 150€ it ran everything nearly maxed, now I hear that when you spend 230 € on an 8800GT it can't even run crysis @ medium ( or so I've heard ?).

Im looking forward to FarCry 2 although I heard that it had been pushed back. Empire:TW will be awesome with naval battles. I think that next year may be a Wii year for me-still not played Mario Galaxy or MP3, and SSBB is coming too...yay!

Graphics card wise, I personally think that devs are right to scale games to take advantage of future upgrades. The graphics I get out of Crysis will get better in 2 years time, and are still cutting edge by todays standards. I dont really see who loses out. It pushes everyone's GPUs at the moment to the limits, and in a year or 2 will do exactly the same.

If you are realistic about settings then a 512meg 8800GT will be fine. If you can get one for €230 then I would as that's a bargain, they are a bit overpriced in the UK atm due to stock shortages.

My guess is that if you have persevered with a 6800GS for this long, you won't be used to over the top graphics or high framerates so you will likely find that a 8800GT at medium settings suits you fine (even in Crysis).
