I don't think they would've have made that much of a difference, not 300+ runs !
What of their effect on the sides involved. The commentary team stated what the Aussies said were England's two biggest threats and they're both gone.
When both fit England are a different side. In terms of bowling Freddie gives a lot (albeit not all the time). Batting; he can sometimes do but Pietersen is a huge loss. He's the player that so many different opponents have come out and said is the biggest catch.
Not only are these two guys not there, but now, maybe apart from Strauss (who next innings must somehow get a big knock) there's nothing there that can even get us near to a draw.
You mean the bowler that's not really a wicket taker (although is, in fairness, a very important part of the team) and the batsman that hasn't made any runs all series?
Fact of the matter is that our entire team hasn't been good enough this match; we can't cite injuries to two players who, while both world class, hadn't had great series so far anyway.
Even though both have been carrying injuries England have been a much better team with them. Much more dangerous.
Freddie has lead with the ball in a few innings even with his knee. Pietersen has got a half century in one and rode out a very tight spell in another (with a serious achilles injury).
