2010 iPhone

Apple will not have a whole host of improvements over the 3GS.

Why?

Because that is against their marketing strategy.

Trickle out the features each year, people will keep buying.
If you make a phone all singing and dancing, how do you improve on it to make another sale next year?

Apple are a business, and in the business of ripping people off. ;)

3GS gave us "Copy ad Paste" and 4G will give us a Profile Manager and Apple will market it as if its a new invention...........Thats what they do!

5G will give us BlueTooth that works and communicates with other non-iphones and PC's(rather han just head pieces as it currently does).

6G will give us a battery life which lasts more han 8hrs

......and they will get away with it and brain-wash the masses because they are clever at marketing......and the public will buy it hook and sinker!

And again i ask what is your problem with that??...i mean it seems like you have nothing better to do but to come on here and belittle me and my views??..does it make you feel all big and strong??.

I'm obviously jealous of your knowledge of Blackberrys like you said Spawn :D

The reason Apple 'trickle' features is that when released the iphone had them in heaps compared with the competition, and reinvented the market for everyone.

The 3G and 3GS are just evolutions.. and just improve on a already good idea.

I think apple will pull the stops out with the 4G, they don't like to play catchup and are inovators that others copy to some extent.

What Apple wont want to do is alienate the normal man in the street... even OAPs buy iphones, thats true genius of GUI design and marketing.

The masses have adopted the iphone, millions have them... some for the wrong reason, some just because it's a handset that just gets the job done.

The 'I want one of those' factor is strong for Apple, and fair play, it's not a bad device as well.

I bet whoever is responsible for marketing the iphone is a multi millionaire :-), it's a sucess story, and thats why it is COOL to hate it on the interweb...and hence the never ending bashing on forums.

edit: Apple are much like Intel, you can bet Intel has some amazing CPUs on the drawing board or in prototype, but why bother releasing them when your older chips compete with AMD and make more money (keep your bleeding edge tech for when you need to fight off a competitor)

Not really a good comparison, being as intel has roughly 75% of the chip market, AMD around 20%. Apple are competing with Nokia, who are the big boys, but also HTC, RIM, Moto, Samsung and Sony to name but a few. Nokia in particular are better at making phones and have a huge customer base. In the time Apple have released 3 iphones, Nokia have released around 10x the amount. Apple and Nokia don't make their own CPU's either, the 3GS and the N900 both use the same iirc.

iphone was good for the market, it made Nokia et al realise that a phone had to do more than they were doing; that the smartphone had to become smarter. The N900 shows this and is one step further toward proper mobile computing. Apple will want to be up with this, just prettier and slightly more user friendly - it's what they do. Apple rarely innovate, they take existing technology and re-engineer it to be easy to use and good to look at. Apple did not invent the mp3 player, they saw something good in the market and blew everything out of the water. Then everyone has to play catch up. Less so with the iphone, but it has, no doubt, moved the market onwards.

good point, but you have to admit, apple are good at taking normal components and engineering something people want.

i just think now is the time they need to raise the game rather than play 'tag along', 4G must be this to stay successful

I've only had a iphone for 2 months after owning winmo devices for last 5-6 years. I've not missed winmo one bit.

Winmo 6.5 is a fudge at trying to get a ancient OS finger friendly, it's outdated and underperforming, it makes even the 'non multitasking' iphone feel like a dream come true and to use.

I'm not a fan boy, I hate Apple, but as a business tool it's perfect for me..

If 4G brings OLED, better cam and multitasking to the table I'll snap one up as soon as I can, it's all it really needs to be market leader again feature wise

I can't wait... it will push the other manu's / OS providers to raise the bar, and thats a good thing for everyone.

Iphone is a benchmark for all phones, thats why time and time again everything is compared to them when reviewed... can't beat abit of competition to push progress

I kind of agree with those sentiments. I have used a WinMo handset for the past couple of years, my last one being an MDA Vario IV running WM 6.0. Not a bad little phone, did everything I needed it to do.

Then last month a friend of ours was visiting from Oz. She had recently got a 3GS and had given her mother her old 2G the last time she was over visiting. This time her mother gave her it back saying it was "too complicated" and she would stick to her old phone. So she gave me her 2G for free as she didn't want to take it back to Oz. I thought I'd give it a whirl and see if I liked how it worked. Having never had an iphone or much experience of them I wasn't that fussed about it.

She said at one point "Once you try the iphone you won't want to go back to another phone".

I didn't believe her. Silly me. :D

Vario IV going on the bay this week.

:D Well, at least it can multi task! :D

Apple are great at drip feeding us with updates.

I have an original iPod Classic 160GB, they then pulled the 160GB for the 1st revision and replaced it with a 120GB, then they announce a 160GB model for the 2nd revision which replaced the 120GB back in sept? SRSLY.

dual core isn't outlandish - it would make sense from both a power consumption point of view (shutting down unused cores is a useful power saving option) and a performance point of view.

Also worth remembering apple have now owned PA Semi (a company who previously developed power efficient ARM chips) for two years and there's been no obvious pay off. It's conceivable it's about time for them to cough up a custom chip for the iphone.

Personally I'm not wild about multitasking unless it's done better than other operating systems do, shutting down apps in task manager on windows mobile was a pain and my 8900 still curls up into a ball and empties it's battery when I forget to shutdown an app. I don't miss it myself, I can listen to music and browse, I'm happy.

my only interest in multitasking on the iphone are:

spotify
instant messaging.

And even these two I think apple could get round without the need for implementing multitasking ala webos or android:

Spotify, I would swap for a subscription itunes model, which would negate that application as ipod already runs background.

Instant messaging, a native app that opens quickly from push notifications and is reliable would keep me happy, or some new bbm esque im system from apple, given most people i know own either iphone or bb and i have both so a new system i could live with.

The point is, once you have it, its hard to go without and its so useful. For me its a big downside to the iphone. Different windows for browsing are very useful too (the current iphone setup for this is clunky)
