In the x260 it will have been JLRs own modern Ingenium engine. The 2.2 in the x250 was a Ford engine from the Transit, Defender, Mondeo etc and is a lot more agricultural.
Some more looking this weekend and a couple of test drives
Test drive - 2.2 [200] Portfolio XF - Wasn't really blown away by it
Had a look at a pre-facelift W212 and didn't like the interior
Looked at a post facelift E250 coupe which was nice but not enough room in the back
Quick look at the 5 series interior and it was ok
Really liked the A6 Sline. Tried the 2.0 D in manual and auto. Preferred the Auto but the place we were in only had high mileage ones - Black A6 Sline Auto is clear favourite so far
Going to try and find a local facelift E220/250 to drive and also 3 litre XF and A6

Maybe it was just the styling on the coupe giving a better overall impression
