2012 NASCAR thread

Green flag scheduled for 12:13 ET. Hopefully they'll get this race run with no more interruptions, holding it any later would be a logistical nightmare given that the next race is in Phoenix, AZ.

They snuck that update in under my radar! :)

Really hope they don't get pushed back any more....

Chatting to a mate who lives 2 hours from Daytona and he told me its been dry all day. I'm not sure that means much, but I've got a mate in America do I get cool points?

You'd get more cool points if you went out and bought a ******* Porsche 911 again.

;)

No, he said he had vibrations. Vibrations don't mean you slow down they mean you tell your pit crew and they try and work out what it is while you drive and cope with it. If these drivers slowed down every time something might happen racing wouldn't exist.

Got to agree with you. And at the end of the day, it was a pretty freakish accident - 99 times out of 100 he'd have missed the dryer truck and ploughed into the outside retaining wall.

That'll teach you!

Essential truths of modern NASCAR 'fandom':

1) Danica sucks, even if she gets taken out by someone else it's her fault
2) Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus are dirty cheats who only won so many championships because they cheat and the Chase and they cheat waaah waaah waaah
3) Montoya sucks
4) Local short track racing, despite being the main feeder for getting drivers into NASCAR sanctioned series, sucks

Jimmie Johnson docked 25 points, Chad Knaus (crew chief) and Ron Malec (car chief) suspended for six races, Knaus fined $100k by NASCAR for the illegal car body pieces that tech inspection uncovered.

Story on NASCAR.com

Now, I'm a big fan of JJ so what I say here will not be all that surprising - I think that penalty is way, way too harsh. I figured on Knaus getting a fine, and maybe a suspension. But docking Jimmie 25 points? He now goes to Phoenix with -23 points, 70 behind Matt Kenseth at the top.

Docking the team 25 owners points would have been fairer, and still sent the required 'Don't **** with us' message that NASCAR wants to get across.

Indeed. The trucks don't race again until the end of the month at Martinsville.

anyone know why trucks have a much smaller schedule than nationwide and sprintcup?

Money. There's a lot less of it in the Truck series. The drivers can usually find a Late Model race or something other elsewhere when on an off-weekend.

Nationwide green flag drops at 21:45 or thereabouts our time AFAIK. Giving the invocation now.

No idea who this girl is singing the anthem, but she's crap.

:D

Can't see that one lasting any longer than this weekend, but it's a neat idea to get around lapped traffic.

Ugh. **** debris cautions. **** them right in the ear.

Yeah, they paved the inside of the dogleg when they re-did the track last year, drivers are able to cut right inside on there now.

This is why I live by myself, so I can watch NASCAR whenever.

Or maybe I live by myself because I watch NASCAR whenever.

Nah. The new CoT concept is for the 2013 Cup series. Not sure what they're doing with the Nationwide cars to be honest, but I suspect they'll fall in line with the Cup car aero package eventually.

#43 nearly kept it off the wall there, and it just snatched back on him. Hope he didn't pop the tyre.

He got pulled around by the aerodynamic effect of Trevor Bayne going around the outside. Tried to correct, the tyres got some bite, and bam! Right into the wall. Just an unlucky deal. It was good to see him get out of it okay.

Besweeet's streaming channel is currently here, by the way. Just in case some of you don't read his tweets. He should be showing the Cup race there later.

It's never normally worth watching anything from Fontana. That being said, this one wasn't as dull as the Bristol race (they really need to return that track to how it used to be before they re-paved and re-banked it).
